Why won't my dog eat his food but still has energy and eats grass?

Kudos to you for being so concerned about Buddy! :-) As long as Buddy is at a healthy body weight, he is likely getting plenty to eat. To make sure he seems to be a healthy body weight, run your hands over his ribs to assure that you can easily feel (but not see) his ribs. You should also be able to see a "waistline" when looking down at him. I can't see Buddy well enough in the pictures to help you determine if his weight is appropriate. Some dogs are naturally picky or have been conditioned to eat less dog food because they know that treats or more appealing food is coming. I always recommend offering food twice daily as you are doing, but some dogs choose to only eat once a day. Avoid midday treats or snacks to try to train Buddy to eat at mealtimes and continue avoiding table scraps. Make sure that Buddy is being offered a high quality kibble (I generally recommend Science Diet, Purina ProPlan or Royal Canin foods) and if you choose to switch foods, be sure to do so by mixing old and new foods together over 5-7 days. If the canned diet seems to tempt him to eat, you can continue mixing a bit in with the kibble, but I would recommend avoiding Beneful and looking for a higher quality canned option. Hello. This could be just a normal schedule for Benny. No dog has to eat twice a day, that is something we have imposed on them. As long as he is healthy & happy, does not seem to be losing any weight, then skipping a day or day and a half is of no concern. If there is any weight loss, vomiting or change in stool quality or quantity, that would be the time to become concerned. But he looks very happy with his friends. Take care.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Austin. I suspect that he is not feeling well as evidenced by his decreased appetite. Has he developed any other signs such as vomiting or diarrhea? If so, he should see his veterinarian. He may require deworming medication or other treatment. In the meantime, keep trying to get him to eat and offer plenty of water. I do not want him to become dehydrated as he is so young. I hope this information helps.

Hello, this could be due to a number of issues, including her known heartworm disease if she is symptomatic and it's making her feel unwell. A few common reasons for a young otherwise healthy dog to have a waxing and waning appetite with no other symptoms would be a low grade chronic pancreatitis, mild IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), or a food sensitivity. If you haven't done a complete bloodwork panel with your vet, I suggest starting there. Your vet can discuss a feeding trial with prescription food - I would recommend trying an easily digestible food that's easy on the stomach such as I/D or EN (there are lots of acceptable brands of prescription food, these are just a few common ones), and if that doesn't help then do a trial of a limited ingredient or hydrolyzed diet for food sensitivity. This may simply be her preference. If she is maintaining weight and behaving normally, there is likely no cause for concern. Eating grass, though, can sometimes indicate an upset stomach. Monitor her for vomiting or diarrhea. If the behavior persists, consider an exam with your veterinarian to diagnose illness of injury.

Poor Ace! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something he shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or other even organ disease. It's likely the diarrhea and the not eating are related. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. Since Ace will not eat anything you offer, he needs treatment and medication to get and feel better. When pets don't eat well, they often don't drink as much as they should and can become dehydrated.
