Why is my dog not eating after eating table food and acting tired?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 80 lbs

My dog Buddy has refused to eat for two days now. He had table food. He does this every time he gets any new type of food. He’s been tired and lousy lately. He’s a Husky/Terrier mix, and is 4 years old.

A few things could be going on:

One, if he got into people food and it was high fat or very rich, he could be experiencing some digestive upset. Picking up his regular food and feeding a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken may help settle his stomach and get him back on schedule. Signs of GI upset also include vomiting, diarrhea, sore belly, etc. If this is the case and a bland diet doesn't help, or he has quite a few GI symptoms, seeking veterinary care is best to rule out more serious issues such as pancreatitis from eating people food.

Two, if he prefers people food to his food, it could be he's trying to "hold out" in the hopes you are going to give in and give him more. If he's otherwise healthy and normal, it is best to stop offering ALL people food and treats, and only offer his dog food. You may need to put his food down for 10-15 minutes several times throughout the day to encourage him to eat. Most dogs will not starve, and will eventually check out their food and eat it. (Sometimes pretending its people food can kick-start this as well!)

I suppose it's possible but I am concerned there is something else going on. Unhealthy human food can cause pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can lead to liver damage, peritonitis and multi-organ failure. Queen could also have a partial intestinal blockage or have kidney damage. Because she has abnormal for 1-2 weeks now, I recommend to have her examined as soon as she can be. She will need some bloodwork and she may need a radiograph. I recommend to go ahead and start a bland diet now. a bland diet is not likely to fix her problem but it won't hurt. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. Encourage her to drink water and keep her activity minimal so she is resting. Make sure to bring in a stool sample as well because parasites can also cause prolonged GI issues. I hope the doctor is able to identify the problem quickly and that Queenie starts feeling better quickly! Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Why won't my husky eat dog food, only treats and cooked beef?

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Tundra evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Why won't my dog eat her regular food after eating human food?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, this is known as dietary indiscretion and it could be the reason. He may be showing signs of dietary indiscretion which can happen from eating something that does not sit well in the stomach. Clinical symptoms that can occur include not eating, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Sometimes this resolves on its own. However, sometimes this does require some form of therapy which is mostly supportive in nature. If she develops any vomiting, diarrhea or inappetence, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and best wishes!

Is my dog tired of her food? She only wants human table scraps.

Yes dogs can tire of their food. If Murphie prefers human food over her own, she might be a bit spoiled so she is waiting for “treats” from you rather than eating her food. I also find this is a very shepherd trait. I had one too that would turn up her nose suddenly at food. I found buying smaller bags of food helped as she preferred it at optimum freshness and I rotated her variety more often. If you’re concerned about it, stop giving her people food and when she is hungry she will go back to her food. You could also try another flavour or meat protein (ie switch from chicken to beef etc) in the same line of food she is eating now and provide more moderation. Remember to slowly switch her food over several days, integrating the old and new foods to avoid tummy upset.

My picky dog won't eat and is lethargic. What's wrong with him?

Poor Yoda. When he doesn't eat is it usually the dog food that he is refusing or is it the homemade food as well? Some dogs will hold out for the people food if they know they will get that later. If he is refusing all food and seems lethargic then I would have your vet check him out to make sure he doesn't have a bacterial infection or a parasite. Some dogs don't like to eat a lot and this could be normal for him, but they aren't usually lethargic on top of it. So please watch him carefully. Also, if you plan to continue to make his own food I would recommend you to visit balanceit.com to make sure you are providing a balanced diet that provides him with the right amount of vitamins and minerals. My dog won't eat his food but eats treats. Is he sick or picky?

Given a choice, most dogs will eat table food before dog food. Discontinue feeding cheese. Feed Sultan on a consistent schedule. Dogs thrive on routine. Prepare his dog food and leave it down for 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, pick it up whether he has eaten or not. Repeat at the next scheduled mealtime. Do not offer any other food or treats between meals until Sultan is eating his own food regularly. You can add warm water or a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate his appetite. Mix well to prevent him from picking it out though.

My pitbull puppy won't eat his food but wants mine after being sick.

It's hard to tell. It may be that Ghost is still experiencing some underlying illness (and schedule a recheck with your vet is always a good idea, especially if he isn't back to normal after treatment). Possible issues such as an allergy to his food, or just a preference to people food (especially if he gets a lot of people treats that make his own food look less tasty) may also be at play. Having your vet recheck to rule out any issues is a good first step. You can also try to entice him to eat more of his food by moistening it or adding a little low sodium chicken broth or boiled chicken (both are easy on the tummy) as well as stopping any extras like people food or treats. If he continues to not want to eat, speaking with your vet is best.
