My dog won't eat 3 days after dental surgery. Is this normal?

This is not normal, so I would be somewhat concerned. I would be more concerned if she was also vomiting, had diarrhea, and/or a decrease in activity. Some pain medications can cause side-effects in the stomach and usually have directions not to give these when they are not eating. Make sure to double-check the medication labels for these warnings. If the dental surgery was yesterday I would give it some more time for the interest in water to come back. I've seen this commonly post operatively where the patient does not want to eat or drink for 1-3 days after the procedure and is then fine after. If she is not taking in any water at all, you can syringe feed her some water throughout the day to ensure she is taking in enough water. Adding moisture to the kibble will give her water but likely not enough if you are only adding a small amount. I would add in 1/2-1 cup of water to the kibble and see how she does with this. If the decreased thirst continues beyond 2-3 days, I would call your veterinarian again and discuss this with him / her over the phone about what they would like you to do next. I hope this helps! Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. Not eating can be a sign of pain in a dog. I would start giving her the medication and see if her appetite improves. If not, then she will need to see a veterinarian to determine the cause of her decreased appetite. You can try adding warm water to her dry kibble or you can offer warmed canned food. I wouldn't be too concerned at this point if the dental was only just done today. Your dog underwent a pretty significant procedure and may not be the same for a couple of days. Give the pain medication as directed by your veterinarian unless your dog vomits again. If this is the case, call your vet about switching to something else. Post-anesthetic nausea is not uncommon so you might consider giving some pepsid or prilosec if you have any around the house. Hope this helps.

Poor girl. It is not normal for a pet to have continuous vomiting and lack of appetite post dental extractions. If she was sent home with an NSAID to take that helps with pain and inflammation, then that could be the underlying cause of her symptoms. This would be considered an adverse reaction to the medication. If she seems like she can't control her vomiting and is very unstable, then yes an ER visit may be best for her. At the very least she needs to be seen within the next 12 hrs if possible, to get her treatment to stop the vomiting and help settle her stomach. Occasionally after spaying, dogs will have no appetite for the first 12-24 hours. In the meantime, take a look at her incision site. If it is red, swollen and hot to the touch, she needs to see your veterinarian right away as these symptoms may indicate infection. You can also try offering her a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice or some treats to stimulate her appetite.

Poor girl. I would definitely recommend taking her in for a recheck appt since she has gone more than 48 hrs without eating at least 1/2 of her food. They need to check her incision area thoroughly for any signs of infection and potentially get her on an appetite stimulant during her recovery process.
