My dog won't drink after dental surgery. Is soaked kibble enough?

She may not have a drive to drink if she received iv fluids during her procedures and you are meeting what she needs through her diet. If she is otherwise happy with normal appetite and energy level and no vomiting or diarrhea you can continue monitoring. If any of these change in addition to not drinking then that would be more concerning as dehydration could ensue. Depending on how long ago the procedure was, dogs can sometimes eat kibble still (typically at least three weeks after the procedure). If she does need it to be softened, equal amounts of water to food is perfectly safe for her.

As for the soft stool, it doesn’t look abnormal enough for me to be terribly concerned. Call and let your surgeon know but in general, if Lou is eating and happy, a little soft stool is no big deal. As long as he is behaving normally, you can offer 1/4 of his meal and a 1/4 cup of water. Soak the food first to soften it in case his teeth and mouth are still sensitive. He likely received IV fluids during the procedure, so dehydration should not be a concern. You can probably feed him normally tomorrow.

Try feeding her some sloppy soup with rice and white boiled chicken, or canned dog food. You may have to sit next to her and entice her to eat. Be patient, she will start eating . The Tramadol sometimes will not work very well, so she may be in pain.

Hello. I would not be too concerned. Just continue to add water, or low sodium broth to his food. You can also offer him broth or stock ( either beef or chicken ) as a source of liquids. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry to hear that Iggy has had all these issues. It is best to start transitioning him back to his regular food now. I recommend just putting a handful of kibble in with the chicken and rice and just gradually increase the amount of kibble at each feeding (and reduce the amount of chicken and rice) until he is back on straight kibble. This should take 5-7 days. I would also recommend giving him prebiotics/probiotics (I recommend Fortiflora Pro) and use it daily until the stools have been completely normal for at least one week. Not only did the induction of vomiting change the normal flora of his stomach but also the addition of the antibiotics probably did more to harm the GI biome. Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria. Fortflora is easy to use - one packet on his food once daily. It is a powder and is very palatable. Each box of Fortiflora has 30 packets so you will have a month's supply.
