My puppy won't eat after tooth extraction. Is she in pain?

Try feeding her some sloppy soup with rice and white boiled chicken, or canned dog food. You may have to sit next to her and entice her to eat. Be patient, she will start eating . The Tramadol sometimes will not work very well, so she may be in pain.

Absolutely the pain could be causing him to lay around. They are very painful. I would wet the canned food down even more so he doesn't have to chew much. He is going to need some pain medicine from your veterinarian. They are going to need to pull that tooth to stop the pain. Poor Rex.

She is likely not eating well due to having a tooth ache. I would wait with changing food until a few weeks after the dental cleaning and extraction to give her time to heal and not cause extra stress.

The loxicam is an anti-inflammatory medication. While it helps with pain it also helps swelling around the extraction areas and promotes healing that way. The antibiotics prevent infection but do not have any effect on inflammation from the procedure. As Bella is doing well so far I would recommend giving the loxicam to help healing. However if she has any issues afterwards such as vomiting, diarrhea and/or decreased appetite stop this medication as rarely it can have adverse effects on the liver/kidneys.

Poor Bayley. She just need a bit of time to settle down, follow your vet instruction reading meds and she will be better soon. I would wait till this afternoon and if she continues to be unsettled, not eating and lethargic I would have her re-checked. Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC pain relievers for dogs. Many are toxic for dogs and can be fatal if given. I'm not sure what kind of surgery your dog has, perhaps a spay, but she should likely not still be in pain three days before taking out her staples. It's also concerning that she won't eat, which could also be due to pain. This pain and anorexia could be an indication of a post surgical complication. Her symptoms are serious enough that she needs medical treatment now. There will be a vet on call for emergencies in your area. The information to find that vet is found on the clinic's answering machine or website. You can also see if there is an ER veterinary clinic in your area. Please take her into a vet asap.

You may try applying an ice pack wrapped in a small towel to the swollen or painful area. I DO NOT recommend giving him any pain medications that intended for humans, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I recommend contacting your veterinarian during normal business hours to ask for other suggestions. If it has been this long and he is still painful, there may be a complication that needs to be addressed. I hope this is helpful!
