My dog ate chocolate, was treated. Why isn't he drinking water?

Poor Waldo! Lack of bowel movements is definitely cause for concern - it can be an indication of an intestinal obstruction. It is possible that Waldo ate something else from the trash that may have resulted in this. Waldo should be seen by a vet right away, especially because you think he is not acting like himself. They can perform an exam with abdominal palpation, bloodwork, and X-rays to determine exactly what is going on and provide appropriate supportive care such as IV fluids. There's not much to be done but treat the symptoms after more than 12 hours. A visit to your vet would be prudent if your dog ate a large quantity and is having tremors/twitches or an irregular/fast heartbeat. If he is acting normally otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless, skinless chicken breasts and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Feed until the stool is normal, then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian.

That's a fair amount of chocolate, and if any of those chocolates were dark chocolate, that is very concerning. Dark chocolate is the most toxic type, and takes the least amount to cause toxicity. I would take your dog into a vet immediately, as they can give her a shot to induce vomiting. They can also give her activated charcoal. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Poor thing! I would still take her in for care as IV fluids would be very helpful for the neurological signs and also to support the kidneys. At this stage everything is absorbed and in the bloodstream so treatment needs to be focused on diuresis.

Shepherd is experiencing a mild reaction to eating this chocolate. Based on the amount he ate, this is an expected reaction to his ingestion. You may also see vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, and elevated heart rate. Because he is only expected to have a mild reaction, you can continue to monitor him. It can take a couple of days for the symptoms to resolve. Should you see any vomiting or diarrhea, you can try a home remedy to help him. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. That amount of chocolate could certainly be a concern for as small a dog as Asta depending on the amount of chocolate in the cake and type of chocolate. 2oz of bakers chocolate would be enough to be potentially fatal, but she would have had to eating about 8oz of mild chocolate to be getting to a similar reaction. That said, usually issues are seen within about 12 hours and include increased heart rate, hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and death. Increased urination is not an issue I would associate with chocolate toxicity. If she is otherwise completely normal, you don't need to anything else. But if she seems off, has tremors or seizures, she needs to see a emergency veterinarian right away. Of course, if she just doesn't seem right, it's better to take her in for an exam and bloodwork to make sure something else isn't going on. Good luck!!

Poor Brady! Fortunately, he's a pretty big dog, so a small amount of milk chocolate is unlikely to cause more harm than the stomach upset that he's currently experiencing. However, if the chocolate in your trash can was baker's chocolate, cocoa powder, or other dark chocolates, it could be a bit more problematic. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which can cause heart and/or neurologic issues. If Brady consumed any of these forms of dark chocolate, I recommend calling the ASPCA animal poison control line (888-426-4435) to determine if the amount he ingested is enough to cause toxicity. It's possible that Brady's watery diarrhea is due to stomach upset from ingestion of the chocolate, as well as anything else in the trash can. Dr. Orioles gave you some good advice regarding a bland diet. I agree that if the diarrhea continues for more than a day, or if he also starts to vomit, refuses to eat or drink, or becomes lethargic, that you should take him to his veterinarian for treatment.
