My dog ate chocolate, kidneys affected. Should I get more vet care?

Hi, I think she needs to be admitted to the hospital for treatment with antiarrythmic medicatiions and anything else depending on how she is when she gets there. She will likely need to have activated charcoal. I hope you can have her rechecked soon as I have had bad experiences with chocolate toxicities t=in dogs with such a high heart rate. There typically aren't any long term effects from dark chocolate poisoning when treatment is received promptly, but it does make a dog very sick. You did absolutely the right thing by having Mad Max seen by a vet. Depending on the amount of fluids he received, he may not need to drink just yet because the fluids hydrated him. He's peeing, which is a good sign. I would continue to watch him, and if he still isn't drinking water in another 24 hours, then I would have him checked out by a vet. The amount of theobromine your pet has been exposed to is relatively low but he is showing some worrying signs of toxicity, for that reason i strongly recommend that you take him to the vet ASAP just in case he needs supportive treatment to go through this phase of potential toxicity.

That's a fair amount of chocolate, and if any of those chocolates were dark chocolate, that is very concerning. Dark chocolate is the most toxic type, and takes the least amount to cause toxicity. I am sorry Chico is sick. Chocolate at high doses can cause sever gastric upset. I am concerned that the continued vomiting will cause dehydration and issues with kidney function. I would recommend taking Chico to the vet for medications to stop the vomiting and rehydrate him. Also I would start an over the counter anti acid to help calm down his stomach. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice once his vomiting has stopped. I hope that helps and Chico feels better soon

It would be hard to tell as every dog will react differently to the ingestion of grape/raisins and chocolate, and it toxicity can also depend on how quickly/slowly any of it was digested. Some dogs may be able to better handle a higher dosage, while others may react strongly to a smaller amount. It's best that you have the bloodwork scheduled, as that will give you the best picture of what is going on for Iggy specifically. I'd also recommend a follow-up blood panel in a month or two, as some dogs have shown delayed responses to ingestion of toxic foods before. Signs to watch out for of something being wrong include lethargy, vomiting, a painful or hunched abdomen, drinking/urinating more, and just general malaise. These are all signs that you should seek more immediate treatment if needed.

There's not much to be done but treat the symptoms after more than 12 hours. A visit to your vet would be prudent if your dog ate a large quantity and is having tremors/twitches or an irregular/fast heartbeat. If he is acting normally otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless, skinless chicken breasts and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Feed until the stool is normal, then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian.
