My small dog ate chocolate cake. Is excessive urination an emergency?

12 lb. dog ate half a chocolate cake yesterday and today has excessive urination. Is this an emergency situation?

That amount of chocolate could certainly be a concern for as small a dog as Asta depending on the amount of chocolate in the cake and type of chocolate. 2oz of bakers chocolate would be enough to be potentially fatal, but she would have had to eating about 8oz of mild chocolate to be getting to a similar reaction.

That said, usually issues are seen within about 12 hours and include increased heart rate, hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and death. Increased urination is not an issue I would associate with chocolate toxicity. If she is otherwise completely normal, you don't need to anything else. But if she seems off, has tremors or seizures, she needs to see a emergency veterinarian right away. Of course, if she just doesn't seem right, it's better to take her in for an exam and bloodwork to make sure something else isn't going on.

At this time frame I would've expected her to have more signs of toxicity if she was going to have issue. However she could still have mild stomach upset so watch her for loose stools/diarrhea and decreased appetite. If she is fine after 24-36 hours she's unlikely to have any issues.

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but my estimate is that it would be at-most enough to cause a moderate to severe reaction. Rosie is already showing signs of a mild reaction, which is hyperactivity. Further signs of toxicity can be vomiting, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Rosie to a vet for treatment/monitoring, because chocolate toxicity can be deadly. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure she has plenty of water and that you check her every two hours for any further signs of toxicity. If she is better within 12 hours, then I would not worry about any further signs of toxicity. I hope that helps and Rosie gets through this fine.

I’m sorry your pups got into the chocolate. I’m glad it was a relatively small amount. If your tiny Yorkie mix ate all that chocolate he could potentially have some adverse effects including increased heart rate and vomiting, diarrhea. The larger dog would likely have much more mild, if any, signs, such as intestinal upset. If there s a chance the smaller dog ate all of the chocolate or if either is showing signs of aggitation, I would bring him to your vet ASAP. Poor pup! Depending on how big your dog is, it's hard to say whether toxicity from the chocolate in the medication will be a problem. As far as the laxative itself, this will probably cause diarrhea but would not be expected to cause any serious toxicity issues. The safest bet would be to have your dog seen by a vet right away, but if this isn't possible, you will need to monitor her closely for the next 24-48 hours. If you see symptoms such as tremors, seizures, or repeated episodes of vomiting, then this would be an emergency and there would be no other option except getting her to a vet immediately.

There's not much to be done but treat the symptoms after more than 12 hours. A visit to your vet would be prudent if your dog ate a large quantity and is having tremors/twitches or an irregular/fast heartbeat. If he is acting normally otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless, skinless chicken breasts and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Feed until the stool is normal, then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian.
