My dog ate chocolate, now he's sick, not pooping, and dehydrated.

Poor Brady! Fortunately, he's a pretty big dog, so a small amount of milk chocolate is unlikely to cause more harm than the stomach upset that he's currently experiencing. However, if the chocolate in your trash can was baker's chocolate, cocoa powder, or other dark chocolates, it could be a bit more problematic. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which can cause heart and/or neurologic issues. If Brady consumed any of these forms of dark chocolate, I recommend calling the ASPCA animal poison control line (888-426-4435) to determine if the amount he ingested is enough to cause toxicity. It's possible that Brady's watery diarrhea is due to stomach upset from ingestion of the chocolate, as well as anything else in the trash can. Dr. Orioles gave you some good advice regarding a bland diet. I agree that if the diarrhea continues for more than a day, or if he also starts to vomit, refuses to eat or drink, or becomes lethargic, that you should take him to his veterinarian for treatment. It's possible the stool color change could be related to the chocolate ingestion, however being given charcoal usually results in dark colored stool (though green is not unheard of.) It may also be that there is some lingering GI upset causing Lindsey's symptoms. If she continues to have strange stool, act lethargic or painful, or hasn't seemed to have recovered from her trip to the vet, bringing her back in for additional care and testing as needed is best to get her on track to feeling better.

There typically aren't any long term effects from dark chocolate poisoning when treatment is received promptly, but it does make a dog very sick. You did absolutely the right thing by having Mad Max seen by a vet. Depending on the amount of fluids he received, he may not need to drink just yet because the fluids hydrated him. He's peeing, which is a good sign. I would continue to watch him, and if he still isn't drinking water in another 24 hours, then I would have him checked out by a vet. I am sorry Chico is sick. Chocolate at high doses can cause sever gastric upset. I am concerned that the continued vomiting will cause dehydration and issues with kidney function. I would recommend taking Chico to the vet for medications to stop the vomiting and rehydrate him. Also I would start an over the counter anti acid to help calm down his stomach. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice once his vomiting has stopped. I hope that helps and Chico feels better soon

That's a fair amount of chocolate, and if any of those chocolates were dark chocolate, that is very concerning. Dark chocolate is the most toxic type, and takes the least amount to cause toxicity. I would take your dog into a vet immediately, as they can give her a shot to induce vomiting. They can also give her activated charcoal. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

There's not much to be done but treat the symptoms after more than 12 hours. A visit to your vet would be prudent if your dog ate a large quantity and is having tremors/twitches or an irregular/fast heartbeat. If he is acting normally otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless, skinless chicken breasts and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Feed until the stool is normal, then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian.

The ice cream could be the cause of the diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
