My dog's nose wound isn't healing and is getting bigger. What's wrong?

This does look like a skin infection, but we cannot say whether it is bacterial or fungal. Your veterinarian may be able to tell with a quick exam and looking at the area with a special light that can diagnose ringworm fungal infections. In either case, this will be best treated with an oral medication....either antibiotic or antifungal. It is usually unrewarding to try to treat a lesion in this location topically because the dog will usually lick any cream or ointment right off. I would recommend that Neyle see her vet for a diagnosis.

Hello. This can be several things. She may have picked up a bacterial infection while rooting around in the soil. This could also be some kind of allergic reaction or possibly even an immune-mediated response. Lesions in this location can be a little tricky to treat with topical medications because most dogs are able to lick them off, at least to some degree. You can try to clean this area with an antiseptic chlorhexidine cleanser twice a day (Hibiclens is one brand), but take care to rinse it well and do not let Bella lick it while you are cleaning. Breaking open a vitamin E capsule and rubbing it on this area may be mildly helpful, but it won't hurt if she licks a little off. As Jessica mentioned, one of the most important things to do is to keep an e-collar on Bella to prevent her from rubbing at this area further. If this lesion persists for another week or worsens at any point, you'll need to take her to a vet for evaluation. It's possible that she may need oral antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications to help get this area under control. I hope that everything goes well!

Based on the picture you have provided, it appears that this could be bacterial or a skin parasite causing the lesion. The skin may need to be cultured and if a skin scraping has not been performed, I would certainly recommend having this done to make sure this is not due to a skin mite such as demodex. If this is not due to a mite and is still there, I would recommend a culture / biopsy of the area for a more definitive diagnosis. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I am sorry to hear about Max. Given his history, if he is not responding to treatment I would recommend a biopsy. Dogs can develop bumps on their nose from injury, trauma, bacterial & fungal infections, often from their habit of rooting in dirt, under leaves, bushes, etc. Gauge may need medication to help this heal, especially if it seems to be getting bigger. Depending on your dog's age and clinical signs, this could be a few different things. A fungal infection is certainly possible, and if this is the case, it will definitely require a systemic anti-fungal rather than something topical to rid the problem. Bacterial or viral infections can also cause this sort of thing. Another distinct possibility are certain types of tumors. One that come to mind in particular is call a TVT (transmissible venereal tumor). We see this a lot in young, in tact male dogs although it can in theory occur in any canine. Other cancerous growths can occur on the nose and face as well, but this one is fairly common. The only way to know for sure will be to obtain cytology and/or biopsies of the affected areas. I would strongly recommend getting Vador into the vet to be examined sometime soon. These sorts of things are best dealt with head on in the beginning. Hope this helps.
