My dog's nose skin is red and itchy. Is this a normal color change?

He may have scraped it, but the skin doesn't look damaged right now, so it may be in the process of healing. It's also possible that it's simply losing the black pigment, which can happen normally. It doesn't appear irritated to me, but I would want to evaluate it in-person to be sure. I think it's fine to just monitor this area for now. I do not see any need for treatment, but you may consider taking him to the vet for an exam if the area appears more read, or develops any further changes that are concerning. Hello, Lioh's may be undergoing de-pigmentation changes in his nose either due to sun allergy if he is outdoors a lot or a form of vitiligo. If sun allergy, this can be very itchy and may spread to other parts of the body. Vitiligo is mainly a cosmetic change that doesn't require medical management. You may monitor for sneezing, bleeding, or rubbing at his nose and consider taking him to your veterinarian if he is showing any of these. Otherwise, he looks like a very cute guy. Hope this helps

We can sometimes see a dry nose if a dog's tear production is decreased as the tears normally flow from the nasolacrimal duct which carries them from the corner of the eyelid out to the nostril.

A red patch on the snout could be due to several things. If your dog is prone to digging with his snout, especially if he has spent time in a crate recently, he may have rubbed a raw spot on his nose. Other possible causes of a red patch of skin in this area would be allergies, bacterial or fungal infections, skin mites (especially Demodex mites, or demodectic mange) or even some auto-immune skin diseases. If the spot does not resolve within a few days or if it seems to be spreading, I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam - he/she can do some simple tests, such as a skin scrape, to determine the problem.

Any lesion/mass or blister on the nose that does not go away on its own within 1-2 weeks time should be looked at by your vet and samples taken of it to aid in identification of the mass. In general masses on the nose can either be an inflammatory reaction (granuloma), benign or malignant tumors. Lets hope that Kane's mass isn't something to be worried about.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

If this is an abnormal color change, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. It could indicate an infection or developing mammary tissue. It could also be related to itchy skin. I hope this helps.
