Why is my dog licking a sore on her nose? What should I do?

I hate to hear that Bear is having this issue. The sores aren’t likely there from licking but certainly the licking doesn’t help anything. Trauma from rubbing the nose, ringworm (which humans can get) and less likely, an autoimmune condition can all look like this. It looks pretty wide spread on his nose and I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian to test for make sure there’s no sign of an autoimmune disease. Hello. This can be several things. She may have picked up a bacterial infection while rooting around in the soil. This could also be some kind of allergic reaction or possibly even an immune-mediated response. You should have your veterinarian check this out as the right diagnosis will led to the correct treatment ( if anything is necessary ), especially if it is getting worse. Poor Max. This type of sore is common from rubbing his nose on a cage door, carpet, dog beds, etc. I would put some neosporin on it twice a day and rub it in. If it isn’t improving, I would have your vet look at it. Your vet will be able to see if he need some oral antibiotics or other meds to help it heal. I hope this helps!

That looks like it must be very uncomfortable! The area is very red and inflamed, most likely a sign of active infection. An antibiotic will almost certainly be required in order to put a stop to the problem. The area on which this is distributed may suggest a contact related allergic reaction. Your dog may have stuck his face in something, and ultimately this is the result. The best method to figure out what the cause of this is, is by obtaining skin scrapings, cultures, and potentially biopsies of the region. The veterinarian will be able to determine which of these, if any, are appropriate once he views the area. You and him may decide that simply treatment with an antibiotic and a steroid first might be more appropriate.

Depending on your dog's age and clinical signs, this could be a few different things. A fungal infection is certainly possible, and if this is the case, it will definitely require a systemic anti-fungal rather than something topical to rid the problem. Bacterial or viral infections can also cause this sort of thing. Another distinct possibility are certain types of tumors. One that come to mind in particular is call a TVT (transmissible venereal tumor). We see this a lot in young, in tact male dogs although it can in theory occur in any canine. Other cancerous growths can occur on the nose and face as well, but this one is fairly common. The only way to know for sure will be to obtain cytology and/or biopsies of the affected areas. I would strongly recommend getting Vador into the vet to be examined sometime soon. These sorts of things are best dealt with head on in the beginning. Hope this helps.

Sounds like Misty is feeling pretty rough! Just under the nose is a hard place to stop licking, as you can't use an Elizabethan (cone) collar to stop her from doing so. You may need to try to distract misty with a chew toy instead that she can put her energy into to help prevent her from licking the spot. if it is very raw and sore, you may also want to have your vet take a look to make sure there isn't an infection or other irritation that should be treated. Your vet may also be able to recommend a no-lick spray or bandage that may be suitable around the nose, as well. Avoid putting any home remedies on the spot, as it may just increase irritation which will increase licking and stop the area from healing.

Several problems can cause irritated nasal planum. However, especially in herding breeds other immune disorders such as discoid lupus, pemphigus, or zinc deficiency can also cause these signs. I typically treat with oral antibiotics for 3 weeks and if it’s not resolving then I biopsy the nose for a diagnosis. Good luck and I hope it heals soon!
