Puppy's nose looks bad after crate training. Is it serious?

Poor Dasani! I would leave it be for now and keep an eye on it. It doesn't look infected to me. You could try gently cleaning it with warm water and antiseptic soap, but if it starts to show signs of infection (swelling, warmth to the touch, pus), then I would take her into the vet to get it treated. I would recommend cleaning the area using a mixture of betadine and water (mix until you have a light brown color) and cleanse the area twice daily. In addition, you can use a product such as Malacetic Conditioning Spray, which can be found online quite easily and apply to the area twice daily until resolved. If it worsens or persists, I would recommend having this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Ouch, poor Oprah! I would gently clean her wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. It sounds like she could have some separation anxiety, and it getting upset in her crate. You can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety and pair that will a DAP pheromone collar that releases pheromones when in contact with her skin. If these methods do not help her, then I recommend having her seen by a vet to discuss the use of anti-anxiety medications. Best of luck, I hope this helps and enjoy your new dog!

We commonly see this problem with pets that are boarded and have anxiety. You can to calm her by placing an Adaptil or DAPP collar on her. You can also try a thunder shirt placed on her while she is crated. The only other way to prevent scraping of the nose while in the crate is to get stronger anti-anxiety medications through your veterinarian or to place an e-collar (cone) on her to try and prevent her from being able to reach the crate with her nose. Apply some neosporin onto her nose to help it heal.

While this may be caused by a bite from another dog, from my experience, this looks a little bit more like a wound from nudging something constantly with the nose. Perhaps nudging a door to a crate, or sticking his nose under a door repeatedly. I recommend keeping a close eye on the area, and maybe even getting Bear an E-collar or "cone" so that he does not cause further trauma to the area. I advise against applying antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin as Bear is likely to lick them off quickly. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bear!

I am sorry to hear about your dog. If he is a dog who tries to escape his crate and these could be wounds from excessive rubbing of his face on the bars, you can try a topical antibiotic ointment. We do, however, worry when we have lesions on the nose or where the skin of the nose meets the fur about immune disorders like lupus which require veterinary care. I would recommend bringing him to the vet for an exam if he is not an excessive rubber on the cage bars.

Poor Max. This type of sore is common from rubbing his nose on a cage door, carpet, dog beds, etc. I would put some neosporin on it twice a day and rub it in. If it isn’t improving, I would have your vet look at it. Your vet will be able to see if he need some oral antibiotics or other meds to help it heal. I hope this helps!
