Dog bit on nose, not bleeding. What to do until vet visit?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 80 lbs

My dog was bit in the nose by another dog this afternoon. I will not be able to get to the vet until tomorrow. It is a cut on the surface and is not bleeding. What can I do to help keep it clean until tomorrow?

Gently clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. I would not point any antibiotic ointment on it because Merlin will just lick it off. You can try to put a bandage to protect the wound, but make sure it doesn't block his nostrils. You can put an Ecollar on him to keep him from rubbing at his nose, and I will put a link below on how to make one at home. Definitely have him seen by a vet tomorrow, as dog bites frequently become infected and he likely will need antibiotics. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Poor Pipi! I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. I would avoid putting a human ointment on it, they typically contain ingredients that are not safe for dogs to ingest (dogs will lick wounds). To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boone. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as I am concerned the wound is becoming infected. He will likely need to topically disinfectant and an oral antibiotic to help his skin heal. In the meantime, be sure to keep him from licking the area by placing an E-collar if necessary. Also keep the area clean and dry (no bathing or swimming until it heals). I hope this information helps!

My dog has a nose wound from a fight. Can I treat it at home tonight?

Those do look pretty ouchie, especially the right wound. If the bleeding has stopped, I would keep the area clean and dry and place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Harlow to keep her from rubbing or pawing at it which may cause it to bleed again. If the wound still looks deep and inflamed, has gotten larger, or begins to look infected (swelling, hot to the touch, oozing debris, extremely painful) then it is best to call your vet in the AM to be seen.

What to put on my dog's bleeding nose scratch to prevent infection?

Since she is able to lick it, it's not advised to put anything on it. The best way to ensure it stays clean and doesn't get infected is to flush the wound with clean water, or saline twice a day for five minutes. Flush the wound with a syringe using a good amount of force. She won't like it, so you'll probably need someone to help hold her. If the wound happens to get swollen, very red and/or is leaking pus, then it would be best to take Molly to a veterinarian for treatment. I hope that helps and all is well with Molly.

Ouch, poor Ruger! Bite wounds can be tricky because oftentimes we only see the tip of the iceberg with the external injuries. The damage to the tissues under the surface of the skin is often much more extensive than the small puncture seen on the skin. It's possible that this bite wound caused damage to his nasal passages, or even just enough soft tissue swelling and inflammation around his nasal passages to cause him to sneeze. Bite wounds also introduce a lot of bacteria and can become infected quickly. You should take Ruger to the vet now for evaluation. Your vet will want to do a full physical exam and may recommend sedating him to more extensively evaluate this puncture wound. Based on their exam findings, they will likely prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pain medications to help Ruger recover. I hope that he feels better soon!

How to heal my dog's nose cut that keeps reopening and bleeding?

Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lucy! The best way for the area to heal is to prevent Lucy from rubbing her nose. I'd recommend getting an Elizabethan Collar (aka "The Cone of Shame") and then apply some triple antibiotic on the area twice daily. Keep using the Cone until the area has healed. You can get Elizabethan collars at your vet and some pet stores. Good luck!

My dog's nose was cut and bled after a cat attack. Is a vet needed?

Even though a picture would help to understand better the severity of it, this cut could get infected (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching.
