My female boxer has a nipple issue after her first heat. What is it?

Hello. This is nothing to be overly concerned about. Manakoa is old enough that there are hormones circulating & this nipple just seems to be a little more sensitive to the effects of estrogen at this point in time. If you were planning on spaying her, this is a good time to consider doing so, but otherwise, as long as the nipple does not continue to show further hormonal influence, it should not significantly affect her. Hi There! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It probably was due to mild trauma (such as from scratching). Given how it looks, it will likely heal on its own without much treatment if you leave it alone and prevent your pup from licking or chewing at it. Good luck!

I think it would be ok to monitor him at this point. If this has not gotten better in the next week or so, it may best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hello. If you are sure that she is not pregnant, then this is just a hormonal response. The breast gland tissue may regress a bit, but as long as she remains unsprayed, she may develop a little more with each heat cycle. Spaying her now may help regress the tissues totally, but with each additional heat cycle, she may develop just a little bit more. So yes, this is a normal condition in an unsprayed female dog. That could be a normal reaction of the mammary glands after the season, and it is likely to resolve spontaneously one or two weeks after the season. if signs persist more than that and discharge comes out from nipples a check up would ideal as false pregnancy or mammary gland inflammation/infection may be present.

Discharge from a nipple can be due to a variety of reasons, including milk production (if not spayed), a bacterial infection, a clogged duct, or another underlying issue. if it is bothering her or you are concerned, I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine if there is something that needs to be addressed. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. The first hear cycle will stimulate full development of her mammary chain. It is not unusual for the nipples to enlarge. The other ones will likely start to have a similar appearance. If not and this nipple stays different from the rest of her chain, then she will need to see her veterinarian.
