When does my adopted dog need his next combined vaccine booster?

He should indeed take monthly heartworm prevention. Your veterinarian will need to do a heartworm test to make sure that Kobi does not have heartworm before he can prescribe the medication. He will need his core vaccinations (at least two courses approx. 3 weeks apart) against Canine parvovirus, distemper, and canine hepatitis. Your vet may think it necessary that Kobi also gets a Leptospirosis vaccination, depending on the area where you live (lots of access to water/river/lake/pond).

The only way to figure out the cause is to have her examined by your veterinarian. You can rule out parasites by using an oral medication like Simparica. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Having her spayed can also help to regulate her hormones. If she is on a one year rabies vaccine, then I would recommend for this year to stay on the current schedule. Once she moves over to a 3 year vaccine, you will have more play in the schedule. I would be suspicious that if the person you adopted Lucy from didn't give you those other vaccine records that she has not had them. They should have been included with her rabies record. You can ask that person for them, or for permission to speak to the vet who administered the rabies vaccines to see if she received her other vaccines. If they refuse to give you that information, it's likely she hasn't had her other vaccines, and I would take Lucy into the vet to have them done.
