How to know if my adopted dog has all her necessary vaccines?

If you can find out where Candle was adopted from, you could contact the shelter and they should have records of when Candle was vaccinated. Otherwise I suggest you take her to your vet and discuss this with him. He may be able to find out also, or will recommend a vaccination schedule that will fit with Candles condition and age.

If you can’t get ahold of the original owner, then no there’s nothing a vet can do to verify Charlie has had his rabies vaccine. To be honest, if they are claiming they lost the records, I would assume he hadn’t gotten any vaccines at all. The vet who gives the vaccines keeps records, so the original owners could have contacted the vet to get their copy. I would advise getting Charlie his DHPPi as well as rabies. I hope this helps.

I would not rely upon this person having given the vaccines properly nor that the feed store kept the so-called cooling chain, ie that the vaccine did not get warm somewhere along the way and became useless. I suggest you start from the beginning. Take your dog to your vet for a basic exam to make sure she is healthy, and have her vaccinated as per recommendation of your vet. Also discuss having her spayed if you do not want to breed her.

In most cases, you'll need owner permission in order for records to be transferred over, so while you can contact the vet, you may not be able to obtain full records. That said, they may at least be able to confirm neuter/vaccine status for you so you can let your vet know. If you can't get any records, you can also have your current vet perform a titer test to see where Wooly's immunity levels are, and then booster vaccines from there.

If he is due the rabies shot regardless of other vaccination history you could go ahead and get it. You can ask the vet to leave some space on he vaccine card before recording the rabies so they can add the previous vaccines when the history arrives.

You will need to start the vaccine protocol over again depending on how long ago Lucky was first vaccinated. She will need a rabies vaccine at 12 weeks of age, microchipping, deworming treatment, flea treatment, and heart worm treatment. Make her an appointment with a vet.

Your dog will need several vaccines. Most veterinarians give a yearly combo vaccine that includes distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and Corona (DHPPC). He will also need his Rabies vaccine. Rabies can now be given every three years after the initial 1 year vaccine. Other vaccines that I recommend are Canine Bordetella vacine (kennel cough) that is given every 6 or 12 months, and a Leptospirosis vaccine (this vaccine can be added to the combo vaccine or given alone). If your veterinarian offers a Lymes disease vaccine (probably means lymes is prevelant in your area), it would be a good idea to get that one as well.
