My dog was just neutered. Is a red rash near stitches normal?

Ouch, poor Dez! This redness and swelling could be due to clipper burn from the grooming, or he could have an infection from the burn. I would make him a tepid oatmeal bath, and soak him in that for 10-15 minutes to see if that helps with the redness and swelling. I would do that tonight and tomorrow morning to see if that helps with the redness and swelling. If it does, he should see a vet, as he may need a topical cream to treat it. I would call around the local area to see if there is a vet open to see him at that point.

The red discoloured area seems to only be a bruise in the skin. I would not be very concerned and it should go away on its own. Just like with bruises on our skin, though they are healing they can sometimes appear larger or darker first. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. With the symptoms you are describing, this could be what we call a mild case of puppy pyoderma. I would recommend bathing with a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved. I would also recommend starting malacetic conditioning spray 2 to 3 times per day until resolved. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem if the redness does not improve in the next 4 days.

Yes, you can get some dry skin around the incision area. It's good that there is no redness, however, and once Snoop's suffers are taken out, you can give him an oatmeal bath to help with the dry skin.
