My dog is turning 3. Is that too old for him to get neutered?

Three is a perfectly fine at to neuter a dog! Elliot isn't a senior dog, and as long as he is healthy, the risks are minimal, just the usual ones for any surgery such as infection and excessive bleeding. Have him seen by a vet to get him neutered. I hope this helps.

Not at all. As long as he is a good candidate for anesthesia he is not too old to be neutered. Older dogs are more likely to develop prostatic disease and other medical problems are avoided by neutering.

5 years is not too old to be neutered. Some behaviors are induced by hormones , and they can also turn into habits independent from hormonal activity, Will he stop roaming? Possibly, but maybe not. Will he become less aggressive: most likely. If you want to know whether neutering helps or changes his behavior, you can have the vet give him an injection that suppresses testosterone (chemical castration). If you are satisfied that this works, you should have him castrated. If it does not change his behavior then castration will only serve to avoid uncontrolled procreation.

He should be castrated. Twelve is not old for a small breed dog and age, in itself, is not a disease. If he is otherwise healthy he should be fine for surgery. Castration, in general, is a very short procedure.

Hello. There really is no maximum age. He is likely starting to mature into an adult, so his appearance and behavior may start to change soon. If not neutered, his face will fatten, he may start marking with urine and may have some territorial aggression. He is the ideal age to neuter now, but it can be done at any time throughout his life as long as he is healthy enough for the anesthesia. I would kennel Scooby after the procedure to keep him calm and contained during his recovery. And I would also talk to the vet doing the surgery about sedatives post op. There is no medical or protective effect, like in female dogs, to neutering male dogs right away. I tell clients that if the dog is showing aggression, dominant behavior or is marking in the house then neuter them sooner. Neutering male dogs before they are middle age will prevent some prostate conditions (BPH, prostatitis, prostatic abscesses) , perineal hernias, and perineal adenomas which are hormonally caused.
