Is an 8-year-old dog too old for neutering surgery and recovery?

He should be castrated. Twelve is not old for a small breed dog and age, in itself, is not a disease. If he is otherwise healthy he should be fine for surgery. Castration, in general, is a very short procedure.

Your veterinarian will likely want to see Charlie for an exam at least a few days before the surgery takes place and may need to have his blood draw at that time to make sure he is healthy enough for surgery. This depends entirely on the patient. Castration in older dogs is often recommended to manage hormonal dependent conditions, certain prostate issues or to remove testicular tumours. Risks include mostky surgical and anaesthetic risks in an older dog

In small breed dogs some vets recommend waiting until the dog is older (6-8 months). The though is their lungs are better developed in an older puppy which makes the anesthesia part of the surgery "safer". That being said, many vets, including myself, have done thousands of neuters of dogs as young as 8 weeks or age with no problems. I think at 4.5 months he should be just fine to be neutered next week.

5 years is not too old to be neutered. Some behaviors are induced by hormones , and they can also turn into habits independent from hormonal activity, Will he stop roaming? Possibly, but maybe not. Will he become less aggressive: most likely. If you want to know whether neutering helps or changes his behavior, you can have the vet give him an injection that suppresses testosterone (chemical castration). If you are satisfied that this works, you should have him castrated. If it does not change his behavior then castration will only serve to avoid uncontrolled procreation.

Denzel is adorable! Since he has had 12 years of exposure to testosterone, neutering him at this point will not decrease his existing prostate enlargement. Anesthesia with a louder heart murmur can be slightly more high risk, but can still be performed in many cases after a cardiologist evaluation with an echocardiogram and cautious anesthetic monitoring. Consider discussing the risks vs. benefits of neutering Denzel at this point with your vet, but it is unlikely to change his prostate issue. I hope that all goes well!

this could be cancerous but could also be a testicular infection or inflammation. At 14 he can safely be castrated if he is healthy. Your veterinarian will examine your dog pre-surgery and determine whether it is safe to give him anesthesia for the surgery.
