Is neutering safe for my older dog with an enlarged prostate?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

My 12 1_2 year old chihuahua has an enlarged prostate. He still urinates well, but vet recommended castration if it worsens. Is castration safe at his age?

He should be castrated. Twelve is not old for a small breed dog and age, in itself, is not a disease. If he is otherwise healthy he should be fine for surgery. Castration, in general, is a very short procedure.
