Should I neuter my hyper 9-month-old dog now or wait until he calms?

The calming chews should be fine to give but you may not notice much effect from them. Typically a vet will send home pain medication (and a sedative if needed) after a surgical procedure. If you are worried that Charlie is showing signs of discomfort (panting, whining, restlessness) then you should call your vet and request some additional pain medication. If he seems fine at home just be sure to restrict his activity as best you can for a few days to allow the surgery site to heal. I hope this helps. If no improvement is seen 1-2 months after neutering him, I would recommend that you consider dog training for him which would for sure help in this case. Have a great day!

I would get a well made dog house that is insulated against inclement weather for him to recover in. To keep him calm during his recovery, it is best to ask your vet for a medication called Trazodone, which is meant to calm pets post surgery. You can also look into a more natural product called Zylkene, which is available online. The only concern with leaving him outside is that he will have the ability to run and jump, which alone can lead to him opening up his incision. Therefore, the best option here would be to take him to a boarding facility for 7-10 days until his incision heals. Best of luck with your pet Scooby and his upcoming neuter and recovery. Take care!

There is no medical or protective effect, like in female dogs, to neutering male dogs right away. I tell clients that if the dog is showing aggression, dominant behavior or is marking in the house then neuter them sooner. Neutering male dogs before they are middle age will prevent some prostate conditions (BPH, prostatitis, prostatic abscesses) , perineal hernias, and perineal adenomas which are hormonally caused. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is not rush to neuter male dogs. As long as he doesn't have behavioral problems and isn't marking it is fine to wait. Neutering does helps with an enlarged prostate, prostatitis and prostatic abscesses that can occur with older age. Just as an aside, most dogs do not reach social or bahavioral maturity until 2-3 years of age, so behaviors Nabi have now may change. I hope this helps!

By convention, the general recommendation often 4-8 months, though early spy/neuter is common especially in shelters. A male dog who reaches sexual maturity before being neutered will grow into a “stalkier” build typically. There are also studies suggesting that waiting to neuter decrease the risk of knee problems and some types of cancers. However, he is also more likely to develop behavioral problems. With ages over 2, unneutered dogs are at a MUCH higher risk of overall health problems. I’d recommend talking to your vet about what their thoughts are. I don’t think there’s any significant difference in early neutering and neutering at 6 months of age. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Neutering a male dog is pretty standard and a relatively easy surgery for a dog to recover from. With in 24 hours after the surgery Toby will feel and want to act normal. Your 2 goals are to prevent licking of the incision, so make sure you get an Elizabethan Collar (cone) or donut and to prevent excessive exercise for 2 weeks. That means no running, jumping, stairs and leash walks only for 10-14 days. It is surgeon preference whether there are skin sutures that need to be removed and sometimes we send them home with 5-7 days of pain medications. After 10-14 days things will be back to normal!
