Why is my dog's neck swollen with fluid after a lepto vaccine?

Some vaccines, respectively the adjuvants contained in the vaccines, can cause a local tissue reaction such as swelling and pain. lepto is one of those vaccines where this is happening more often. Keep checking the bump for heat and pain and fluctuation and if you think it is getting inflamed or painful you should take Rosie back to the vet for a recheck as she may have an injection abscess which should be lanced and flushed. Usually "normal" vaccine tissue reactions disappear within a week.

Hello and thank you very much for your question. What you were most likely experiencing is an injection site reaction. D’s can sometimes go away within 24 to 48 hours for these can stay for months. Sometimes these reactions can also be painful and elicit other immune responses such as difficulty breathing, etc. My best advice is to contact the veterinary clinic that administered the injections and tell them what you are experiencing. What most likely will happen is that they may want to re-examine your animal and possibly give you some topical or oral or injectable medication to offset the inflammation. Generally, these appointments do not cost anything and be makers of the vaccine take care of the costs associated. But this all depends on the veterinarian and the clinic involved. Well that depends on the severity of the adverse reaction. If she is having a mild vaccine reaction (1 bout of vomiting, loose stool), then an anti-histamine (i.e. Benadryl) can be given in most cases and will calm the reaction down. However if she is having a more severe adverse reaction (i.e. continuous vomiting, anaphylaxis, severe lethargy, anorexia), then she will need an antihistamine shot (for immediate reversal), +/- steroid shot from your vet , +/- fluid therapy and close monitoring to ensure that the reaction subsides and that she remains stable.

Getting vaccines can be stressful and painful to the dog, and Scrappy may be feeling a little off from all the stress of the day. I would continue to monitor him, and I would be worried if he starts having protected vomiting or diarrhea, develops a swollen face and muzzle, and starts having trouble breathing. Those can be signs of a rare but serious vaccine reaction, and in that case, I'd take him into a vet right away. Try putting a cold compress on where he received his lepto vaccine to see if that helps him. You can apply for 5-10 minutes a couple of times a day. I would avoid carrying them if it makes them cry, and you can try putting a cold compress on site if they will let you for five minutes at a time a couple of times of day to see if that helps. Please do not give them any human pain medications, as many are toxic to puppies and can be fatal if given. This pain should go away in a day or two. If it doesn't, give the vet a call, as they may want to see the puppies. As for side effects, typically you would see them develop within 24 hours of the vaccines. When there is a swelling in the area beneath the jawline, particularly if It is on both sides of the neck, it is typically one of two different things: swelling of lymph nodes or swelling of salivary glands. It would be unlikely to see this type of side effect from an immunization but not unheard of. More than likely I would expect to see it from having something lodged in that area. Typically we see localized reactions to these lymph nodes when an area nearby them is aggravated (such as the throat or mouth). If there is still something lodged in the throat, I would recommend having your vet determine if the objects needs to be manually removed before an incident occurs. Causes of severely swollen salivary glands are typically from trauma, which may or may not be due to something lodged in the throat / mouth. If the swelling seems to be getting bigger somewhat rapidly rather than subsiding, I would be concerned that this is the issue. Typically, this is a problem that may require the intervention of a specialist to resolve. Generalized swelling of the lymph nodes can be caused by infection / inflammation anywhere in the body. It sounds as though your vet initially suspected an infection causing the swelling around Lexi's neck. There can be some very minimal fluctuation in the prominence of the salivary glands and lymph nodes that are located under the neck, which can certainly occur with infections. However, other conditions can also cause swelling in these areas. Puppy strangles (also called juvenile cellulitis) is an autoimmune condition that can cause some pretty prominent swellings around the neck. Given Lexi's age, this would be my first suspicion. Other issues, including lymphoma or a salivary mucocele, are always possible, although they'd be highly unlikely in such a young puppy. At this point, I think your next step is to take Lexi back to her vet for a follow up visit. Your vet will likely want to run some diagnostic testing on this swelling or even some baseline blood work to check her blood cell counts and organ function. Depending on their findings, they may prescribe steroids to help treat puppy strangles or another medication to treat a different condition. I hope that everything goes well!
