It's likely she either slightly torn the nail at the base and now it's infected or she got a puncture wound which is now infected. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian. It does look like there is some discharge/pus around the nail bed and I would recommend getting it rechecked by your vet, if confirmed she may require a course of antibiotics. Bathing the are in saline/salted water and drying carefully will help to freshen the area in the meantime. If she is very lame x-rays may need to be considered to rule out underlying factors behind the lost nail/swollen toe

Hello. Posey may be chronically licking at this nail for some reason. Usually, this is an infection with Malessezia paronychia, a yeast like organism. Next time you see your veterinarian, suggest a skin scrape be done at the level of the nail bed to see if she can get more information. If organisms are seen, then treatment with an oral antifungal medication & a medicated shampoo for a month usually clears this infection up. The discolored nail will slowly grow out. Ouch. That does look swollen. Dogs can get bacterial or yeast infections around their nail beds. If that is what is going on, the Epson Salt soaks will likely slowly make the swelling go down over a couple of days. However, if Tom is licking the nail, it will likely stay moist and have a harder time resolving. Unfortunately, there are other conditions that can occur around nail beds like tumors and auto-immune problems, so if it is not getting better, is getting worse or seems painful I would take him to your vet. i hope that answers your question. The most common cause of brown discoloration of nails is a yeast infection. Most yeast infections are secondary to allergies and excessive licking of the paws. If he licks his paws then you should talk to your vet about trying medications to control his allergies. In the mean time you could soak his paws in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. Dry them well after soaking.

Zio’s nail would only be related to the swelling if it had an infection. Check the base of the nail for redness, a break or discharge.
