My dog's nails are red. Is it a yeast infection? When to see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 75 lbs

I recently noticed my dogs nails are beginning to get stained red at the top. This has been about a month of noticing this but as they grow longer they’re still stained. Not all of them are stained either. Could this possibly be blood or dirt? Should I be bringing him to vet?

The most common cause of brown discoloration of nails is a yeast infection. Most yeast infections are secondary to allergies and excessive licking of the paws. If he licks his paws then you should talk to your vet about trying medications to control his allergies. In the mean time you could soak his paws in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. Dry them well after soaking.

This can be a sign of a yeast infection, and if Winston is licking the area more than usual, it will be making things worse. This is something that needs to be treated by a vet, so I recommend giving his vet a call now to make him an appointment. I hope this helps!
