Can I use a muzzle to train my dog to be alone? Is it safe?

This is a safe, painfree muzzle for a short time. I only use a muzzle like this for a few minutes when needed to do a precedure. If it's tight and the dog is very excited it may restrict their breathing which could be serious. If you need a muzzle for a longer period of time I recommend a plastic cage type muzzle as they can open their mouth and breath better and you can give them tiny treats when they are wearing it. Usually getting them used to it for very short periods of time, and having help holding Bruno when you put it on will prevent a fight and reduce the chance of injury to both you and him. Obedience training will improve his behavior and perhaps then you won't need a muzzle. Hopefully Bruno isn't hurt after he fell. If he is I recommend a veterinary exam. Hello there. I recommend using a basket muzzle for Volt so he can breathe more easily when it is on him. You can get him used to the muzzle by putting treats (like peanut butter) in the muzzle before placing it on him. Hope this helps!

It sounds like your dog has a degree of separation anxiety. I would recommend first getting him crate trained. If you keep him in a crate while you are gone this will keep him safe from hurting himself or damaging other things in the house. I would also recommend taking him on a fast-paced walk for 20 to 30 minutes before you leave the house. This will help drain some of his nervous energy. It would also help to give him a toy or a treat to play with and keep him busy while he's in the crate. Yes, a basket muzzle is a good idea but you should also consider working with a professional in-home dog trainer. They can probably help you train her to stop this behavior rather easily. I am sorry to hear about Bongo! A basket muzzle does allow for drinking but they cannot eat with it on. Try feeding him in a closed room to prevent anyone bothering him (and getting hurt). I would recommend a plastic basket muzzle instead of metal to prevent injury. Much more important, is to get Bongo on some anti-anxiety medication. This can be LIFE-CHANGING and I have so many great success stories. There are many great medications available with little side effects that are safe for daily use. My personal favorite is Trazadone but there are several great choices. Do yourself (and Bongo) a huge favor and talk to your vet about your options. In general, if you place the muzzle property, pets can’t get it off. The muzzle needs to be tight enough that they can open their mouth just slightly to breathe but not enough to actually get a ‘bite’. Your veterinarian may sometimes put on a tighter muzzle but for at home purposes, that guideline is generally fine. The muzzle straps should be pulled straight back behind the head and tight enough so that the pet cannot pull it off. I recommend to go to the website of the muzzle company and look at photographs to serve as a guide. With any muzzle, you do not want to dog to try to pull the muzzle off as they can hurt themselves with their nails. You may need some one to hold him and prevent him from scratching at the muzzle.
