My dog keeps getting his muzzle off. How can I prevent this?

This is a safe, painfree muzzle for a short time. I only use a muzzle like this for a few minutes when needed to do a precedure. If it's tight and the dog is very excited it may restrict their breathing which could be serious. If you need a muzzle for a longer period of time I recommend a plastic cage type muzzle as they can open their mouth and breath better and you can give them tiny treats when they are wearing it. Usually getting them used to it for very short periods of time, and having help holding Bruno when you put it on will prevent a fight and reduce the chance of injury to both you and him. Obedience training will improve his behavior and perhaps then you won't need a muzzle. Hopefully Bruno isn't hurt after he fell. If he is I recommend a veterinary exam. Hello there. I recommend using a basket muzzle for Volt so he can breathe more easily when it is on him. You can get him used to the muzzle by putting treats (like peanut butter) in the muzzle before placing it on him. Hope this helps!

It's perfectly fine to use a muzzle (I'm assuming that's the same thing as a mouth guard) to make sure Damon stays safe and doesn't eat things he shouldn't. He won't think anything of it. Another option is to work on teaching him a "leave it" command. To do this, have a boring dog treat in one closed fist and hold it out to him, he'll try to get the treat for a while and then give up, as soon as he gives up say "Yes!" and give him a really special treat with the other hand. Repeat and repeat and repeat. Once he's really good at this (and not falling for the trick at all), say "leave it" before putting out the boring treat hand. Keep practicing using better and better treats, but always making sure to reward him with something special. I also love head halters to help with control on walks. Muzzles are tricky to fit depending on the size of the head and length of the nose. If you are able I would take her to PetCo and try on several types to see which fits best. If she’s going to wear it a lot I prefer a plastic cage type muzzle so they can open their mouth to pant if needed. Talk to your vet about getting him some anti-anxiety medication to calm him down enough to get the muzzle on. And frankly, even after he is neutered he’ll probably need something like that for daily use while you can do some counter-conditionung training. My favorite is trazodone as it is very safe, can be used long or short term, can be started and stopped, and can be given with certain other sedatives and anti-anxiety medications. I personally do not think muzzles should be used with out supervision. The muzzle can get caught on things and the pet can get stuck or worse. I would recommend trying to crate train if you want Bruno to be alone in the house. You can also try blocking him into only 1 room or area of the house. This type of a muzzle is called a basket muzzle and they can breath with it on. However again I would not recommend using it if no one is home

Yes, I would recommend a basket muzzle. You need to use this type of muzzle so he can still open his mouth and pant. Do not use a cloth muzzle that will keep his mouth closed.
