My dog fell resisting muzzle. Is he hurt? How long is it safe to use?

I was trying to muzzle him up and playing he was resisting and attavh his bidy to wall and while resisting he try to save himself from muzzle and fall side ways on thenground and after falling he make noise uuuuhhhhmmmmm like it hurt him so will that cause any damage or break to chest bone? Also i am attaching muzzle photo so how long can i tie this type of muzzle can this muzzle be life threatening?

This is a safe, painfree muzzle for a short time. I only use a muzzle like this for a few minutes when needed to do a precedure. If it's tight and the dog is very excited it may restrict their breathing which could be serious. If you need a muzzle for a longer period of time I recommend a plastic cage type muzzle as they can open their mouth and breath better and you can give them tiny treats when they are wearing it. Usually getting them used to it for very short periods of time, and having help holding Bruno when you put it on will prevent a fight and reduce the chance of injury to both you and him. Obedience training will improve his behavior and perhaps then you won't need a muzzle. Hopefully Bruno isn't hurt after he fell. If he is I recommend a veterinary exam. I would recommend trying to crate train if you want Bruno to be alone in the house. You can also try blocking him into only 1 room or area of the house. My dog keeps getting his muzzle off. How can I prevent this?

In general, if you place the muzzle property, pets can’t get it off. The muzzle needs to be tight enough that they can open their mouth just slightly to breathe but not enough to actually get a ‘bite’. Your veterinarian may sometimes put on a tighter muzzle but for at home purposes, that guideline is generally fine. The muzzle straps should be pulled straight back behind the head and tight enough so that the pet cannot pull it off. I recommend to go to the website of the muzzle company and look at photographs to serve as a guide. With any muzzle, you do not want to dog to try to pull the muzzle off as they can hurt themselves with their nails. You may need some one to hold him and prevent him from scratching at the muzzle. Aggressive dog biting? Can a basket muzzle help manage behavior?

I am sorry to hear about Bongo! A basket muzzle does allow for drinking but they cannot eat with it on. Try feeding him in a closed room to prevent anyone bothering him (and getting hurt). I would recommend a plastic basket muzzle instead of metal to prevent injury. Much more important, is to get Bongo on some anti-anxiety medication. This can be LIFE-CHANGING and I have so many great success stories. There are many great medications available with little side effects that are safe for daily use. My personal favorite is Trazadone but there are several great choices. Do yourself (and Bongo) a huge favor and talk to your vet about your options. Training is often needed with medication, but training alone will not work for these types of cases. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Bongo!

Hello there. I recommend using a basket muzzle for Volt so he can breathe more easily when it is on him. You can get him used to the muzzle by putting treats (like peanut butter) in the muzzle before placing it on him. Hope this helps!

My dog is aggressive on walks and won't wear a muzzle. What to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Firstly, this is almost always fear-based. Talk to your vet about getting him some anti-anxiety medication to calm him down enough to get the muzzle on. And frankly, even after he is neutered he’ll probably need something like that for daily use while you can do some counter-conditionung training. My favorite is trazodone as it is very safe, can be used long or short term, can be started and stopped, and can be given with certain other sedatives and anti-anxiety medications. How often should I walk my reactive dog with a muzzle & spike collar?

This is great news! I would recommend continuing to work with Panda like this as often as possible. After a month or so of consistently good behavior you can try short walks without the muzzle and see how she does. The more you work with her the better she will become. If Panda has generalized anxiety, to more things other than just dogs, you may consider talking with your veterinarian about a behavior modification drug for her. Oftentimes training, like you are doing, along with medication to help ease her anxiety will help you see results even more quickly. I hope this helps.
