What are these bumps on my dog's mouth? Should I use Benadryl?

Poor Brooklynn! I would worry that she is having an allergic reaction to something. Sometimes we are able to figure out what a dog has had an allergic reaction to and sometimes we can't. Either way, we need to resolve the allergic reaction. The only over the counter product that can be used at home is Benadryl (https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/). However, your vet can give a Benadryl injection that will work more quickly and may also give a steroid injection if needed, so I would recommend having your vet evaluate her and decide on the best treatment for her. If the bumps are getting worse, Brooklynn is not eating or she vomits, she needs medical attention. If she appears to have trouble swallowing or breathing, it is a medical emergency and she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. Good luck! Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Those bumps do not look like a bug bite reaction as but bite reactions are usually haired swellings in the skin. I would be worried that these are an infection or masses of a different type (benign (non-cancerous) masses or more concerningly a cancerous mass). If they popped up quickly then they are more likely infection. I would recommend not giving Benedryl, putting an e-collar on Kelso so that he can't scratch them open, and get him to a vet as soon as possible for testing and medications. Best of luck with Kelso.

The Benadryl should help if she’s itchy but she needs to see a vet to determine if it’s an infection and get her some oral antibiotics if needed. Good luck and kisses to Baby!

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching. Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!

The most common cause for the bumps around Ben's lips are a deep pyoderma (skin infection), juvenile cellulitis, an immune condition or demodex. I would recommend starting with a 3 week course of oral antibiotics. I would change his food bowels to metal or glass and clean them thouroughly daily. If you are using ceramic or porous bowels I would throw them away. I wish you the best!

Thank you for providing pictures of the affected area. From what I can observe it does not look infected at this stage. i would continue to monitor at home for the time being. Signs of infection would include; Pain Redness- which is growing or spreading Discharge Foul odor Swelling Changes in appetite Vomiting or dirrhoea In the meantime you can apply a cool compress to the bumps forever few hours for the first 24, then switch to a warm compress.
