My dog has moist nose sores that aren't healing. What should I do?

Hello. This can be several things. She may have picked up a bacterial infection while rooting around in the soil. This could also be some kind of allergic reaction or possibly even an immune-mediated response. You should have your veterinarian check this out as the right diagnosis will led to the correct treatment ( if anything is necessary ), especially if it is getting worse. Based on the picture you have provided, it appears that this could be bacterial or a skin parasite causing the lesion. The skin may need to be cultured and if a skin scraping has not been performed, I would certainly recommend having this done to make sure this is not due to a skin mite such as demodex. If this is not due to a mite and is still there, I would recommend a culture / biopsy of the area for a more definitive diagnosis. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to an infection though it could also be due to an immune mediated disease for instance. Most of the time these require a biopsy to determine the origin. Antibiotics can help in these cases though again it depends on what is the actual cause of these lesions. While this may be caused by a bite from another dog, from my experience, this looks a little bit more like a wound from nudging something constantly with the nose. Perhaps nudging a door to a crate, or sticking his nose under a door repeatedly. I recommend keeping a close eye on the area, and maybe even getting Bear an E-collar or "cone" so that he does not cause further trauma to the area. I advise against applying antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin as Bear is likely to lick them off quickly. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bear!

This could be just an infection though I am suspicious that there is a growth underneath causing this. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. This is severe and no home remedies are expected to improve this. Hello. Has your veterinarian done a biopsy on the nasal tissue? If not, until cancer is confirmed, this could be something else like an infection or autoimmune condition. Please discuss this with your veterinarian because there are things that might be appropriate to treat this condition based on what is found on the biopsy. Hello. The skin issues that are shown in the photos are what we call "hotspots". These are moist bacterial infections that can be caused by a number of things including fleas, allergies, trauma to the skin, too much swimming, etc. The infection itself is very itchy and uncomfortable. Sonny should be seen by a veterinarian to assess if there are any other things going on and to have these areas clipped and cleaned. Your vet will most likely prescribe a combination of topical and oral medication to clear the infection.
