My show puppy has missing incisors. Is this a genetic dental problem?

I think the best thing you can do is see if the breeder will let you take the puppy to the vet to have this checked out for yourself. The vet will be able to tell you if there will be problems in the future or not. Should the breeder not allow this (and I would ask to do it when the puppy is a bit older, around four weeks), then do not get the puppy. Any reputable breeder would allow a potential owner to do a vet check. I hope this helps!

Incisors are not essential teeth as most dogs either chew with their back teeth or swallow their food. It would be quite usual for a permanent tooth to be dislodged that easily as well. He likes being warm! I wouldn't worry as long as he can walk away from the heater and cool down. That's great news that his tooth is coming in. Be aware that the tooth may not develop normally. You will have to wait and see. It sounds like the missing tooth/abnormal tooth is not affecting his ability to eat or play but abnormal teeth may be a reason not to breed dogs (you would want to check with the breed registry). You could seek referral to a dental specialist but I would not generally recommend removal at sch an early age, indeed the surgery required to remove these may further damage the developing adult teeth and create additional trouble. Rope chews and rubber teething rings may provide enough physical stimulation to jaw to encourage more normal allignment and many dogs manage perfectly well with a crooked smile as long as the teeth are not causing pain due to contact with the lips, tongue or nearby teeth. Continue to monitor for signs of discomfort which may indicate the need for intervention in the future. All adult teeth should be erupted by 9-12months and a complete dental assessment wold be recommended at this stage

It is a bit difficult to tell from the picture but the tooth to which you are referring appears to be a baby tooth. If this is the case, it should fall out and an adult tooth should take its place. Also difficult to tell without an in person oral examination, but it appears that based on the picture and the age you have provided for Dexter, that there are retained baby teeth that should already have fallen out. If Dexter is truly unneutered and this is a procedure you plan on having done at some point, having those baby teeth manually pulled while under anesthesia will likely be in his best interest to avoid any significant dental problems while continuing to grow. Some smaller breeds may have delayed eruption of thier baby teeth but typically by 9 weeks canines should be visible. In rare cases this may require veterinary assistance such as incising the gums. I would recommend talking to your vet at D's next puppy visit for vaccinations. Or scheduling an oral exam just to be safe. Dental radiographs may be needed to assess her dentition.
