Why do my 8-month-old puppy's adult teeth look discolored or damaged?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures. The brown on the teeth is enamel hypoplasia. Enamel formation occurs around 2 weeks to 3 months of age. Anything like trauma, a fever, nutritional deficiencies, infection, metabolic abnormalities, toxins and parasites that occur in that window can cause enamel hypoplasia. Distemper viral infections and other Morbillivirus species infections are commonly recognized as causes. I hope this helps and have a great day!

This looks like enamel hypoplasia, which is a problem that usually occurs during tooth development and can be secondary to certain infections or trauma. This might also be a devitalized tooth that needs to be extracted. I would recommend having your vet take a look in person.

That is Finn’s baby tooth. The discoloration generally indicates an injury to the tooth but it could indicate an abscess. Finn will not lose this toother for another 4-8 weeks. I recommend to call your veterinarian since they are most familiar with Finn. They may recommend an exam or may tell you to monitor at home. Your doctor will make the call. I hope this helps.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures, it appears that the tooth may have been traumatized. This may or may not have compromised the health of the tooth. I would recommend a dental cleaning to remove any tartar and also to get x-rays done of that particular tooth to see if there is any evidence the tooth is broken below the gingiva or if there is disease of the pulp chamber of the tooth. Thank you for posting pictures. (I know that is always a challenge with a puppy!) From the pictures, the brown area just appears to be particulate build up on the tooth. That particular tooth has 3 roots, so there is a depression between the roots that things can get stuck in. (One of my dogs always has problems there.) I would recommend using an infant toothbrush and pet toothpaste (my favorite is PetSmile (http://store.petsmileusa.com)) to brush her teeth and continue daily. I hope that was helpful! Congratulations on your new puppy! Teeth can appear discolored if there has been damage to the blood supply for the tooth or just before a baby tooth is about to fall out. If you feel there may be an abscess present i would recommend that you have her seen by your veterinarian sooner

Akilla appears to have severe dental disease from these photos. She needs to see a veterinarian for assessment and probable dental cleaning and and extractions under anesthesia. The loose teeth are usually painful and she is at risk for dental abscess or systemic infection from her mouth.
