My 9-week Maltese puppy is missing bottom canine teeth. Is it normal?

There can be some variation in teeth eruption time. By 8 weeks I expect to see most teeth erupted. If by 10 weeks they are not there then a consultation with a veterinarian with dental radiographs or a referral to a veterinary dentist would be ideal. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Puppies usually have their baby teeth in by 6 weeks old. Sugar's teeth may be a little bit slow at coming in, and may or may not fully erupt. Her baby teeth should fall out and should be replaced by her adult teeth by 6 months of age. She may just need a little longer for them to grow in, but if not, I recommend making an appointment to have her seen by your vet to make sure there are no issues such as gum irritation happening. From your description, it sounds like Sophie has retained her baby canine teeth on both sides - this isn't "normal", but it is a problem that occurs frequently in toy breed dogs. The baby canine teeth will need to be removed by her veterinarian to prevent them from causing problems with the adult teeth, so I would recommend discussing this with your vet when you are able to - it's normally a quick and simple procedure :)

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your picture it appears to be a baby canine tooth. In small breed dogs sometimes the baby teeth can become retained and the puppy doesn’t lose them at all. I recommend removing the baby teeth that haven’t shed on their own when the puppy is spayed or neutered. My thoughts are that at least one Chacha’s baby canine teeth didn’t shed when it was supposed to. It was likely delayed. And it’s a GOOD thing it’s out now. If you are worried have your Vet take a look to see if any more baby teeth are present and discuss removing them at her spay. I hope this helps and have a great day!

Usually the puppy teeth will not come out until the adult teeth are pushing through. At this point you can continue to monitor the area. Watch for any signs of infection in the tissue like redness or discharge. Most adult canines will start growing in between 5.5 - 6 months of age. if they are not grown in by 8 months of age or if you see any evidence of infection, have him examined by the veterinarian. This is completely normal and right on schedule. These are the first teeth to fall out. Adult teeth will appear in those spots soon. The teething process takes about 6-10 weeks total. Most of the time, the teeth just seem to disappear....puppies swallow them or they end up in the grass outside, etc. Usually the last teeth to fall out are the canine or “fang” teeth. This can be a common issue in young dogs, especially of small breeds. If the canine tooth doesn't fall out by the time the adult tooth has grown in, we normally recommend removal of this tooth at the pet's spay or neuter. The tooth can be a site that easily gets infected or is easily broken, and this is the reason we recommend removal,though we do see dogs who live with the baby tooth and don't have problems with them. They are also an area where tartar quickly accumulates as they age.
