My dog has Campylobacter and E. coli. What's the best treatment?

In dogs, currently erythromycin is considered the drug of choice in treating campylobacter. That being said, we are seeing cases with drug resistance with this bacteria, so ideally a culture and sensitivity is performed to determine the best drug in each individual situation. This is a bacteria that can also make humans ill, so precautions should be taken to prevent transmission including good hygeine/hand washing and avoiding the pet being around people with suppressed immune systems. I would continue the antibiotics until they are gone. When you are almost done with the antibiotics I would have your vet recheck her feces to ensure all of the campy is gone. Sometimes it takes more than one course of meds to get completely rid of the bacteria. Also you can add In a probiotics which will help to build up fit immunity. Also, make sure she isn’t going back outside and reinfecting herself by eating dirt or drinking stagnant water. I hope this helps

Most accurately though would be to treat the infection based on a culture but it would be acceptable to try to treat with cephalexin if your veterinarian agrees that that is appropriate based on Moti's medical history. Campylobacter is an intestinal bacterium that can infect people as well. Antibiotics will usually clear up the infection. Make sure you wash your hands well after handling your dog. Do not let your dog sniff or eat his own feces, and you might want to get some moist wipes and wipe his bum after he did his business. Throw the wipes away (inaccessible to the dog or children), and wash your hands. This should clear up with the antibiotics in a relatively short time.

It sounds like you are doing everything right. I would keep treating her if she still has cysts in the stools. When they "clear" the giardia is completely dependent on the dog. There is not cut and dry answer to that question. Same goes with how many rounds of treatment they will need. Some puppies clear it with one course of medication. Others take months of treatment. Hello, thank you for your question about Charley. Giardia can be very frustrating to treat and many puppies require multiple rounds of deworming to completely treat the infection. I suspect that she likely has a more resistant infection and not that she is immunocompromised. I would not recommend adding any supplements/immune boosters at this time. Hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear Bruno is having issues! Your best bet is to find an integrative veterinarian near you that can utilize herbal medicine and acupuncture to help you treat Bruno. CIVT and AHVMA have online searches to help locate a holistic veterinarian. Without having an examination it is impossible to say what herbal treatments will work the best for Bruno. It is also not possible (or legal) for a veterinarian to prescribe medication for Bruno without having a veterinary-patient relationship so it is necessary for Bruno to see a veterinarian to have these issues addressed.
