My dog has Campylobacter. Will it cause lasting damage? What should I do?

Csmpylobacter is typically obtained by ingesting infected feces, food or water. It is hard to say the exact source of infection. It is typically not fatal and is treatable. If this has been diagnosed already, continue any medications that were recommended to you. In dogs, currently erythromycin is considered the drug of choice in treating campylobacter. That being said, we are seeing cases with drug resistance with this bacteria, so ideally a culture and sensitivity is performed to determine the best drug in each individual situation. This is a bacteria that can also make humans ill, so precautions should be taken to prevent transmission including good hygeine/hand washing and avoiding the pet being around people with suppressed immune systems. I would continue the antibiotics until they are gone. When you are almost done with the antibiotics I would have your vet recheck her feces to ensure all of the campy is gone. Sometimes it takes more than one course of meds to get completely rid of the bacteria. Also you can add In a probiotics which will help to build up fit immunity. Also, make sure she isn’t going back outside and reinfecting herself by eating dirt or drinking stagnant water. I hope this helps

Dogs become infected from campylobacter jejuni by coming into contact or ingesting infected feces, or food and water. Dogs do like to eat feces, so it could be that they stuck their head in the fenced area to eat the feces of the chickens, or ate leftover food that may have been kicked out of that area. Campylobacter spp are also commonly isolated from free-living birds, including migratory birds and waterfowl, crows, gulls, and domestic pigeons, so feces from them could have been dropped in your yard as they flew over or walked in it, and your dogs could have ingested that. It can persist for long periods of time in feces, water, and urine. In addition, wild rodents and insects such as flies have also been reported to harbor and transmit rodents and insects such as flies have also been reported to harbor and transmit c. jejuni. As you can see, there are a number of ways that your dogs could have gotten it, but it would not be from their dry dog food, and from what I have found, rabbits are not a vector for transmission. Hazel is adorable! Antibiotics are the treatment of choice for campylobaacter in dogs. Did your vet not prescribe any? It is not really a treatment for it but it will reduce the shedding of the bacteria from her. Most accurately though would be to treat the infection based on a culture but it would be acceptable to try to treat with cephalexin if your veterinarian agrees that that is appropriate based on Moti's medical history. Campylobacter is a bacteria that can be transmitted from animals to people, but if the cat is not having diarrhea, then there is no need to treat him for it. If he is having diarrhea, then it would be best to have your vet evaluate him sometime soon. I hope that helps and all is well with Ben.
