Why does my dog stop walking on leash when dogs bark or in new places?

Do not take him to these places until you train him to look at you (with treats) in social situations. This will take some time. You may want to try having a friend come with their dog and walk together. Having a confident older dog leading the way may encourage yours. Also going to an obedience class may help Django learn to walk and be relaxed around people and other dogs. They will practice leash walking and it will improve his confidence and social skills. Using an anti anxiety supplement such as Solliquin can relax him while you are working on the training. Be patient and he should improve with time and training. These can help stop the pulling behavior. You may also look into the low voltage shock collars. These collars emit a small shock that is similar to being snapped by a rubber band. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Lucci's behavior is common. He is still young and you can still work on this. I would take him to a trainer to have him learn the "leave it" and "look" commands. I would purchase a gentle leader face harness and use that on walks. Do not take him off the leash around other dogs or children until he listens to you perfectly. Little breed dogs are loud and they bark. Some are more pushy with their dominance and you will need to figure out how much Lucci will exhibit these behaviors as he grows up and reaches social/behavioral maturity (up to 3 years of age). It sounds like your pups may be a little under socialized and may need some extra help. Tugging on a extra short leash can just create more tension and stress which may encourage the barking and aggressive behavior. It is best to contact a local trainer or behaviorist in your area who can work with you on dog on dog aggression, usually with a training technique of BAT or desensitization to get your dogs used to being around and positively interacting with other dogs. It is important to work with someone in person that can be there to step in if there is a problem and observe/teach what behaviors are happening. If your dogs are able to, a basic obedience class may also be useful to teach some loose-leash walking manners, and help you and your dogs understand and work better together.

If Cassidy genuinely wants to play and meet these dogs, I don’t know that I would necessarily do anything. If this stems from fear of other dogs, leash anxiety specifically, or protectiveness of you, these are treated differently. Lowering the fear threshhold (if appropriate) via anti-anxiety medication can help tremendously. I’ve had severely dog-aggressive dogs who, with medication, don’t seem to care at all when they pass another dog on a walk. Results of course vary depending on root cause, medication, and individual dog. Counter-conditioning is also crucial. This is the act of training Cassidy to associate other dogs with something good (usually treats). This can take weeks and all of dedication and patience but is usually more effective and long-lasting than medication. Sometimes it is not effective however, until the medication is started. I’d have a conversation with a vet first to help narrow down the cause and start on medication if appropriate. Then move to a reputable trainer or behaviorist. Best wishes to you and Cassidy!

It sounds like Bear is developing some anxiety about walking for some reason. If you're pulling on his leash, correcting him, speaking to him in a frustrated way in any manner, stop all that immediately. It may also be nothing that you're doing and just genetics coming in to play. I recommend bringing really special treats on your walks and keeping him happy and relaxed with those. Plan on continuing this for a few weeks to a few months. If that doesn't work, I'd highly recommend speaking with a qualified positive-only dog trainer. As a final note, definitely do not use an electric collar on this pup under any circumstances, or you will see worsening of his behavior.
