My dog has a minor cut. What should I do to prevent infection?

I am sorry to hear about your pup! Ideally we would use a chlorhexidine soap while being careful not to get it in the eye. You can purchase this at most drug stores under the trade name Hibiclens or the store may have a generic version. After cleaning you can apply a topical antibiotic ointment and monitor the area for increased bleeding, swelling, or yellow/green discharge which can be a sign of infection and veterinary care will be needed. If you discover the wound gets larger/appears to open up after cleaning then sutures (stitches) may be needed by the vet.

Suturing it closed may allow much faster healing than leaving it open. Otherwise be sure to keep it clean and dry. You can use an antiseptic like betadine or chlorhexidine once to clean it. Be sure to dilute cleaner then rinse well. Use just today or if the wound gets extremely dirty. Using daily can actually slow healing. Keep the area clean and dry. I recommend Ares stay primarily indoors until it is closed as he could get a maggot infestation of flies lay eggs on the wound. Using hydrotherapy or gentle water from a hose is a good way to keep it clean. If there is swelling, discharge or pain, Ares needs to see a vet for medications. I hope he heals quickly.

Since that is just a tiny cut I would just disinfect it and otherwise leave it alone and let it scab over. It should heal without complications. Monitor the progress and should it swell and discharge pus, you will need to take your dog to a vet for some prescription antibiotics. But at this stage this looks like it will heal nicely without any treatment. Do not put hydrogen peroxide or neosporin on the scrapes, they will actually disturb the healing process.

This presentation could be due to a trauma (bite wound) and/ or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be continued at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (twice daily). I would recommend to shave fur around the wound (clippers are best as if you do it with scissors you may injury him) to be able to clean the area best as possible. After cleaning you can dry it up and apply any cream containing zinc oxide (like sudocream). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. This looks like a minor graze in the pictures and should heal uneventfully. Monitor for heat, pain, swelling or discharge which may indicate infection but this would not be expected. Bathe with cooled boiled water or saline to keep clean and fresh if he will allow you

Depending on how large the wound is, it may heal faster if sutured closed. If not deep, keep her from scratching and keep it clean. I would not recommend she go swimming if the wound is still open as they may lead to infection. But if relatively healed she should be fine. If need to clean use only gently soap and water. Daily applications of peroxide will actually inhibit healing.

This looks like a fairly small, superficial abrasion so I think it would probably okay to continue to monitor it. If MK is licking the area I wouldn't recommend using Polysporin. If the wound seems to be getting larger or you notice an increase in redness, swelling or discharge you should have your vet examine it.
