My dog got a small bite. What's safe to clean it and prevent infection?

I would clean it with either Betadine or Chlorhexidine solution (diluted 1:10 with water). Try to flush the solution down into the hole. I would do that twice daily, dry it thoroughly after cleaning and then you can apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment like Neosporin. This does appear to be a minor abrasion. You can flush the area with cool water once a day for 1-2 minutes to help prevent infection. Otherwise, this should heal fine on it's own and I would not recommend putting any ointments or antiseptics on it. I hope that helps and all is well with Bronson.

I am sorry to hear about your pup! Ideally we would use a chlorhexidine soap while being careful not to get it in the eye. You can purchase this at most drug stores under the trade name Hibiclens or the store may have a generic version. After cleaning you can apply a topical antibiotic ointment and monitor the area for increased bleeding, swelling, or yellow/green discharge which can be a sign of infection and veterinary care will be needed. If you discover the wound gets larger/appears to open up after cleaning then sutures (stitches) may be needed by the vet.

This should heal without problem, and I would keep an eye on it for signs of infection. If they are play fighting a lot, then you may have to keep them separated until the wound can heal. 1. Clip the hair away from the wound using buzzing-type clippers, not scissors or a razor. Depending on how large the wound is, it may heal faster if sutured closed. If not deep, keep her from scratching and keep it clean. I would not recommend she go swimming if the wound is still open as they may lead to infection. But if relatively healed she should be fine. If need to clean use only gently soap and water. Daily applications of peroxide will actually inhibit healing.

Hello, poor Klien! It looks like the scrape is superficial. I would clean it once with soap and water, the monitor it for any bleeding or other discharge. It should be able to scab over and heal on its own otherwise. If it has not healed in 5-7 days you should have your veterinarian evaluate it. You may use a small amount of neosporin if you find it necessary, but be sure it does not come in contact with his eye. Hope this helps.
