My dog tore a paw muscle. How long until Metacam helps her walk?

Hi i took my pet to the vet tuesday and was told shes torn a muscle in her paw.they gave her an injection of pain killer and anti inflammatory and a course of metacam.is metacam a pain killer aswell as anti inflammatory.my main concern is that she still int putting weight in it.roughly how long will it take be fore she uses her paw again.thank you

Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication that will relieve pain and inflammation. It could take a week or so before she is all the way better. If she isn't improving than she should be rechecked by your vet for additional diagnostics. Your vet can take an x-ray to look for abnormalities.

    Yes, Metacam is an anti-inflammatory medication as well as a pain medication. It can take 7-10 days to see improvement with a minor soft tissue injury like this, so I would recommend giving the entire course of medication as directed by your vet and keeping her as calm and quiet as possible - no running or jumping, short leash walks to potty only. If there has been no improvement after 7-10 days, then I would recommend a recheck with your vet as she may need x-rays or other diagnostics to determine why things are not improving.

    Just as with people, sprains and muscle tears need time to heal, usually 4 to 6 weeks. So while Metacam will take any inflammation and therefore pain, the damaged tissue needs to heal and this will take time. Nothing to worry yet,.

I would not recommend giving the Metacam until he is evaluated by a vet. While it would be good for pain control, it can be dangerous in some situations and your vet would need to determine the safety concerns and dosage. For now, it's best to ice the affected area for 15 minutes, 2-3 times a day until he can be seen by the vet. I hope that helps and Panda gets better soon.

My dog has arthritis. Is Metacam safe for long-term use and organs?
I am sorry to hear about Tasha! Many dogs take NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) long term with no negative consequences. It is the rare case where the liver or kidney may be affected or the GI tract experiences upset. This is why we recommend blood work to monitor every 6 to 12 months when pets take the medicine long term, and often the effects are reversible. If your dog is in pain, I would follow your vet's advice and use the medication. There are other NSAIDs also available, a newer one called Galliprant is supposed to have less risks though it hasn't been used as long, so we don't know for certain if those claims are true. Other options also include omega fatty acid supplements, glucosamine chondroitin supplements, Adequan injections, acupuncture and laser therapy, so you can ask your vet about these options as well if you decide to take a different route.

It may be a sign of pain from staying in that position. I would continue the metacam as long as there is a good appetite and drinking well and contact your vet for addition pain medication to add to it. Keeping the puppy confined will also help with minimizing pain

My dog accidentally took too much Metacam. What's the next step?
Since this was not quite double the appropriate dose your dog should be ok. Do not give another dose for at least 48 hours. Make sure Evie has access to plenty of fresh water. She may develop GI signs (like anorexia, vomiting and diarrhea) but they should not last more than 24 hours. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
