My dog has arthritis. Can Metacam or anti-inflammatories relieve pain?

Actually, it is the Tramadol that, in dogs who are prone to seizures, can cause seizures. Metacam is an NSAID, and does not usually cause seizures. You should consult with your veterinarian whether Metacam is suitable for your dog (it should not be given to dogs with kidney issues, for example) and if so for a proper dosage. Tramadol and metacam can be given together. They are 2 different drugs with different mechanisms of action and different side effects. Metacam has a very narrow dose whereas tramadol has a wider, safer dose range. Metacam is an NSAID and can cause a variety of side effects, most notably gi ulceration and kidney injury. Dosing of both should be provided by your vet based on your pets health history and bloodwork. Monitoring of bloodwork is very important with metacam use. No, do not take her off Metacam as it actually speeds up the healing process and slows down the arthritis as it combats inflammation. By reducing inflammation it also reduces pain. So please do not take her off the Metacam.

Each of them work slightly differently but at the end of the day all three of them reduce inflammation which is probably the most important aspect of treating arthritis. there is no definitive answer to your question, each dog respond differently to pain medications, some dogs will benefit more from one over the other two. i would probably advise starting with Meloxicam first.

I am sorry to hear about Tasha! Many dogs take NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) long term with no negative consequences. It is the rare case where the liver or kidney may be affected or the GI tract experiences upset. This is why we recommend blood work to monitor every 6 to 12 months when pets take the medicine long term, and often the effects are reversible. If your dog is in pain, I would follow your vet's advice and use the medication. There are other NSAIDs also available, a newer one called Galliprant is supposed to have less risks though it hasn't been used as long, so we don't know for certain if those claims are true. Other options also include omega fatty acid supplements, glucosamine chondroitin supplements, Adequan injections, acupuncture and laser therapy, so you can ask your vet about these options as well if you decide to take a different route.

Metacam is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug which is a powerful pain killer. Gabapentin is also a very good pain killer, but it takes time for it to work and it sedates the dog initially. I suggest you call your vet tomorrow and ask him which one he recommends this time, as depending on the type of pain one or the other can be better.

Hello. You can wean her off the pred onto the Metacam , or you can add additional pain medications such as tramadol or gabapentin. I, personally do not like long-term prednisone because of the possibility of side effects, but even Metacam can cause some issues.
