King Charles incontinence & drinking more after Metacam. What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 10 years and 10 months old | 17.2 lbs

My King Charles has newly developed urinary incontinence. She just finished week of metacam treatment for a hip issue. She also appears to be drinking more. She has a Syrinx. Won't be able to see vet until 2-3 days from now is there anything I can do temporary

Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Because one of the possible side effects of a non steroidal anti-inflammatory like Metacam is kidney issues there is a possibility the changes you are seeing in Faith are related to kidney damage. Other possible causes for the changes you are seeing are a UTI, bladder stones, bladder inflammation or true urinary incontinence.

Because kidney disease is a serious concern I would recommend having Faith seen for blood work as soon as possible. If kidney dysfunction is present Faith will likely need supportive care (like IV fluids). If you haven't already, I would stop giving the Metacam until blood work and an examination can be done. Allow Faith free access to food and water. But again, I encourage you to try to get to a veterinarian sooner than 2-3 days from now. Hopefully, this isn't a serious issue like kidney disease but with the history of being on Metacam, I would rather you err on the side of caution. Best of luck to you and Faith!

Poor Trick. He may have been drinking more water because he was uncomfortable. If his gums are still moist and not sticky then he is likely drinking enough water to support the metacam and prevent any kidney or liver damage. If he has to stay on Metacam long term, I highly recommend bloodwork once a year to check on how his body is tolerating the anti-inflammatory. Also, I definitely agree that it is important to keep him comfortable. I would consider getting him on a good joint supplement like cosequin, dasuquin, or duralactin every day to help support his joints. Finally, if he is starting to feel better then you may try to decrease his dose to 1/2 and see if you are still able to keep him comfortable. I hope this helps!

It sounds as though Faith has not received adequate pain control and this is something that should be addressed. If she is just on an anti-inflammatory, I would consider adding a medication such as Methadone or Tramadol to help ease the pain further if the current medication is not cutting it. If x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound have not been performed yet, I would recommend having these done. A CT scan may also help in determining the source of pain. I hope this helps! My dog is incontinent, on meds, still needs a diaper. What can I do?

By medications, I am assuming you mean medications for incontinence. There are several medications available to treat this problem, and some patients will respond to a different type than the one they are currently on. You may also be able to increase the dose of the current medication, or give it more frequently. If Katie has not been evaluated for other possible urinary issues with your vet, it may be a good idea. She may have been misdiagnosed as urinary incontinent when in fact she may have urinary bladder stones, kidney disease, UTI, or a congenital defect causing urine to leak (like an ectopic ureter). If by medications you were not referring to those for incontinence, then she may be urinating frequently as a side effect of those medications. Incontinence medications may help with this issue. With either scenario, I would recommend that Katie see a vet for evaluation and possible medication adjustment.

My senior dog is incontinent at night. Is it UTI or kidney disease?

Hi there! I'm sorry to read about Martha's troubles. There are several reasons for incontinence in dogs. It can range from something as simple as a urinary tract infection to kidney disease as you've mentioned, to actual incontinence. Sometimes stones or crystals in the urinary bladder can cause incontinence too. Normally what I do for a pet that is having urinary incontinence is evaluate some lab work like blood and urine and make sure the kidneys are ok, and that we aren't dealing with a urinary tract infection - which includes sometimes a kidney infection. If any of these things are the potential causes, I'll treat them accordingly. I will also check xrays to look for urinary bladder stones. If all of the above things are ruled out, meaning they aren't the cause, I will treat with incontinence medications. I'd definitely recommend a vet visit for Ms. Martha. You may get a lot of answers about this issue and her overall health, which is important for senior pet!

My dog on Rimadyl for knee, still falling and not peeing. Why?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is concerning as the Rimadyl is supposed to be helping but things continue to be about the same. This could be due to a neurological issue for example. I would encourage you to check in again with your veterinarian to have Lex reevaluated as she has not improved much. They could consider another medication such as gabapentin or more advanced diagnostics to try to diagnose the matter. Best of luck!

My dog with kidney disease took Metacam. Is one dose safe for her?

Hello, Lola is indeed at higher risk for adverse reactions even after a single dose of meloxicam, however your veterinarian is likely not too concerned with the severity of her kidney disease. Therefore, the side effects of meloxicam to her kidneys would be dependent on how severe her kidney disease is. I would recommend monitoring her kidney values for the next five days as Meloxicam has a long half-life and can take up to 5 days to remove completely from the body. This could be done with daily blood checks. Also know that of all the NSAIDs, Meloxicam has the widest safety margin in the phase of kidney disease. Look for any signs of increased drinking, decreased urinations, lethargy, painful abdomen, vomiting, or a decreased appetite and have her evaluated immediately if you note any. Is excessive drinking and incontinence normal after pyometra surgery?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The increased drinking and urinating could result from residual infection, and irritation to the bladder during surgery. The diarrhea can be due to stress, pain, or the antibiotics. All in all I would say that if she is eating and becoming more active, I would not panic yet. Give it a few more days. If no improvement in the urination problem in 2 days, or if worsening in any way, it’s time for a recheck with your vet. Best wishes to you and Chanel.
