My dog on Rimadyl for knee, still falling and not peeing. Why?

Yes, I would be concerned. These are not usual side effects of Rimadyl, and given that Jelly has back problems, I would be concerned that it is having effects on the nerves leading to her bladder and bowels causing these symptoms. I would have Jelly seen by a vet as soon as possible.

I am so sorry to hear about Lilly. If this just happened it may take some time for her to heal. If it has been a week or more she may need additional testing (if she hasn't had an x-ray this is needed, as well as possible sedation to evaluate the joints, particularly if the hind leg is affected we want to check her cruciate ligament in her knee). If she seems painful even at rest, you can talk to your vet about secondary pain medications as well.

If he is still taking the Rimadyl I would stop giving it and call your vet as soon as they are open. He probably should got back to your vet for a follow-up. It may not be related to the Rimadyl at all but it is better to be safe than sorry. Even though he is eating and drinking, that much pacing and restlessness is not normal.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Rimadyl does not have this side effect typically. I would suspect that Shanti could be dealing with weakness from arthritis or vestibular disease. Vestibular disease will typically go away on its own after time. Arthritis weakness will usually be around long term and providing palliative care to reduce discomfort is the best thing to do at this stage. If the weakness / loss of balance worsens, I would see your vet to have her examined. A dog Shanti's age may also develop brain lesions that can affect her gait, balance and cognition. This is not a typical side effect of carprofen with the most common side effects being gi in origin. Is your pet drinking more water as well? As these drugs (nsaids) can affect the kidneys increased thirst/urination is sometimes related to this. Other options could be he is sore and not making it outside as often or has a urinary tract issue (bladder/prostate). I would recommend a recheck with your family vet to check his kidney values and rule out a urinary tract issue. That sounds like neck pain and it could be from disc disease or other causes. Rimadyl can help but a lot of dogs with neck pain need multimodal pain management. And, it can take time to resolve, especially if disc related. The length of time of pain management can be variable but often is required for weeks if not longer dependent on the case, cause, response to treatment, side effects, etc. At your dogs age you will need to be very careful with Rimadyl as it can be hard on the kidneys. Older dogs especially benefit from multimodal pain management to try to decrease drugs like Rimadyl dose and dosing frequency. Rest is key, ideally crate rest. For disc disease this is typically 4 to 8 weeks, but this is case dependent and is best guided by the vet who examines the patient. The codeine could definitely be the culprit. Sedation is one of the main side effects. I would recommend calling your vet to discuss a lower dose, especially if her pain is well controlled. There are also many other medications that could be used instead to see if she tolerates a different medication better.
