My dog can't poop from matted hair. She bites. Will a muzzle work?

You could consider bathing him which will make the lump of feces more manageable when is wet. You have to get trimmers, not scissors, to cut the hair around the rectum. This will remove any debris. You can apply a warm compress to the area to help with pain and the inflammation. Once it is all cleaned you apply cortisone cream to help

Hello. She may be having some irritation from her anal sacs/glands. These can become impacted or infected and are itchy or painful. A veterinarian or even some groomers can express these for you. Try calling a grooming center to see if they offer just that service alone to keep your costs low. There may even be instructional videos online to teach you how to do it yourself, but it can be unpleasant and most dogs do not like it. If he is extremely aggressive while being groomed, you may want to consider having him sedated and groomed at your vet's office. This will mean that Marley is closely monitored during the sedation and supported with fluids and heat if necessary. Your vet can also perform a thorough exam, and ensure that Marley's heart and lungs are healthy enough to handle the sedation. At home, you can try calming chews available in most pet stores, and consider getting Marley a muzzle to keep yourself safe.

My recommendation for this type of behavior is to make sure you are in control of the situation. If dogs know that you are not fully in control, they will take advantage of this. I would recommend putting a basket muzzle on her when you go outside so she cannot bite you, this way you have better control over her and she is unable to bite you. Next, I would get a pronged collar to help gain better control over her so that you can correct the behavior better. When she stops the behavior or is being good, she gets rewarded with treats. This will help reinforce the good behavior. When she bites or tries to attack you, a firm tug on the leash with the pronged collar in a downward motion and saying "off!" will help deter this behavior. I also recommend incorporating a spray bottle with water in the training and every time she does this behavior, spritz her in the face, tug on the collar and say "off!". If this does not work, then a shock collar is something to consider in aiding in training. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

The easiest way is to take him to a groomer and let them deal with it. They will have to put a muzzle on him so they don't get bitten but they are experienced at it and sometimes it is best to let them be the "bad guy" instead of you. If you want to try yourself, then you will need to get a muzzle or have a person that knows how to properly hold him so you don't get bitten and then try to work on that area yourself with some warm water and shampoo (like just bathing the hind end). If I were you, I'd let the groomer do it......way less stress for everyone involved!

If the poop is just stuck to the fur I would recommend either soaking it to get it off or if you have a dog clipper (like a groomer uses, not scissors) and clip it off.
