My dog has mastitis. Is black skin & open wound on her teat normal?

The best thing to do is to clean the wound well each day. You have to also make sure that the wound does not have maggots in it, because these will make the wound much worse. The fly spray is OK for outside the wound, but is not good for inside the wound and will delay healing. I recommend flushing the wound with clean water twice a day to help it heal quicker. I do not recommend applying any soaps or antiseptics like iodine to the wound, because this can also delay healing. I know this may seem contrary to what you have been told, but please trust that this is the best way to treat a wound. Mastitis can be a very nasty infection and can be caused by a variety of different bacteria. If the infection is not healing despite antibiotic treatment, speak to your veterinarian about performing a culture and sensitivity to determine if there would be a better type of antibiotic to treat Lace's infection.

It looks as if Fluffie has a pretty severe infection of her mammary glad. She will need antibiotics and possible a surgery to debride the dead tissue so it can heal. I’m sure this is painful and uncomfortable for her as well. I would recommend getting her to a vet as soon as possible.

Yes, it does sound and look like that breast has got mastitis. Have you tried to gently wipe away the crusty covering on the nipple with some lukewarm water ? Then apply lukewarm compress on that single breast for 5 minutes at time, leaving about half hour in-between. If the breast is still quite hard, I think the only option is to take Dory to see your vet. Hope she gets better soon and greetings from my own Basset hound Poppy :-)

Pus can be detected from the nipple. I suggest and exam by your Vet first before starting any medications. We can not prescribe medications on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach because we can not perform and exam. An exam is required by law to have a valid Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship in order to prescribe medications. The gland should be expressed or still nursed from. It could be either. A biopsy of the area as well as a culture and sensitivity panel should be done. This may determine if Daffi has a cancerous mass or severe infection. If it is cancer, surgery may be an option to resect the mass. Surgical debridement can be done of it is infection to remove dead or dying tissue. Have an honest discussion with your veterinarian and family regarding Daffi's quality of life and prognosis (once you get a diagnosis).

It could be mastitis but it is hard to tell from the photos. Usually mastitis is warm to the touch and the teat is red/swollen/painful and there may be yellowish/green discharge. You can do warm compresses on it if you think it is mastitis to see if that will help but being that she is pregnant it may be best to have your vet check it out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
