My dog's mastitis teat is bleeding after a walk. Is it serious?

The black skin is dead tissue, and the hole underneath is the exposed mammary gland. Sometimes these types of mastitis can heal without surgery, but sometimes the dead tissue will need to be surgically removed to make it easier for the body to heal the wound. I would recommend that you have Daisy re-checked by a vet since this new wound appeared. I would usually start using special bandages on a wound like this to help remove remaining dead tissue and bacteria, include pain medications, and start hydrotherapy. Since these types of wounds can be very painful and irritating, Daisy should be wearing an e-collar 24-7 to avoid self-trauma.

Pus can be detected from the nipple. I suggest and exam by your Vet first before starting any medications. We can not prescribe medications on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach because we can not perform and exam. An exam is required by law to have a valid Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship in order to prescribe medications. The gland should be expressed or still nursed from. She has a serious infection there, first of all separate her from the puppies completely, so they can't feed on her anymore. secondly you will need to contact your vet as she needs an antibiotic course to treat this nasty infection.

Yes, I would take Lulu into the vet just to be safe. The color of her teats could be due to so many puppies nursing, but mastitis can occur in nursing dogs, which is fatal without treatment. Because of this, it's always important to have any concerns with the teats checked out by a vet to sure everything is ok. I would make an appointment for her on Monday. I hope this helps!

Sorry to hear that Honey isn't right. I would want to know if that vet only analyzed the discharge or actually obtained a needle aspirate of the mass itself. While analyzing the discharge is fine, it is not going to be as accurate or meaningful as obtaining a sample of the mass. The most effective way to find out what is happening would be removing the affected area and sending it out for a biopsy. If it is an abscess or some sort of cyst, it would be curative hopefully. If it ended up being malignant in some way, they may have to go back and remove the entire mammary chain. Mammary cancer would be pretty unusual but certainly not impossible for a four year old dog. Do not allow the puppies to suckle on the dog that is not their mother. She is getting mastitis (infection in the mammary glands). You need to keep them separated. This looks like mastitis which is a breast infection. Please take her in right away for treatment as this can become a very serious and painful problem. They will give her antibiotics and may need to do additional medications to reduce the swelling and inflammation. This can become life threatening is not treated quickly.
