Why is my nursing dog's teat hard and clogged? Is it mastitis?

My dog has been breastfeeding for four days I checked her teats and one isnt producing milk it's like it's clogged. And is very hard inside the book.... Is it early mastitis?

Yes, it does sound and look like that breast has got mastitis. Have you tried to gently wipe away the crusty covering on the nipple with some lukewarm water ? Then apply lukewarm compress on that single breast for 5 minutes at time, leaving about half hour in-between. If the breast is still quite hard, I think the only option is to take Dory to see your vet. Hope she gets better soon and greetings from my own Basset hound Poppy :-)

Hello I am sorry Dory is having this problem. This does sound like early mastitis from what you are describing. This can become very serious very quickly. I would recommend going to a vet right away if possible to see if antibiotics are required. Otherwise I would get a warm cloth and warm up the teat. It then needs to be massaged out. If it is very clogged then massaging if too hard can cause the infection to burst inside her and go into the blood-stream, so it is best to have her checked by a vet first. If you can warm it up and massage it out, then do this repeatedly every 4 hours or so. If you look at the milk and it is yellow, clear, green or anything but happy white like the other teats then you need to get her to a vet. Try to keep the puppies off that teat for now, as they could get sick by drinking infected milk. If the gland becomes cold, painful, green, purple, red, or looks worse, this can become life-threatening, so get her to a vet ASAP. It looks good from the picture so you may have caught it early enough to just massage it out. Good luck with her!

Yes these signs could be due to mastitis. I would recommend a check up as soon as possible to confirm clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotics are usually needed to treat mastitis.

Mastitis typically presents as a red, firm, painful mammary gland. I would also recommend taking her temperature rectally. It could be mastitis but it is hard to tell from the photos. Usually mastitis is warm to the touch and the teat is red/swollen/painful and there may be yellowish/green discharge. You can do warm compresses on it if you think it is mastitis to see if that will help but being that she is pregnant it may be best to have your vet check it out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Nursing dog's engorged breasts: Is it milk buildup or mastitis?

Engorgement is the previous stage to mastitis, so if you manage to get the milk flowing, you will be safe. If not, the mammary gland will progressively become harder and more painful, progressing to infection that will require medical treatment. If in doubt best to have her checked over, as mastitis can be quite serious. Hope she gets better soon !

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Kiera! Blood could be from trauma. Mastitis is very painful and is an infection. The mammary gland is red, hard and painful. Pus can be detected from the nipple. I suggest and exam by your Vet first before starting any medications. We can not prescribe medications on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach because we can not perform and exam. An exam is required by law to have a valid Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship in order to prescribe medications. The gland should be expressed or still nursed from. Cephalexin doesn't hurt the puppies. I hope this helps and good luck!

My nursing dog has a red bump and high temp. Could it be mastitis?

Nursing is a bit painful, and it may be an injury from nursing. Her temperature of 102.5 is on the high side of normal, and the 103.1 is a bit worrying. Keep taking her temperature. If it continues around 103, this spot gets worse, the area gets hard or firm, there is pus or discharge from her teats, or the teat itself become discolored, have her seen by a vet.
