My dog's nipple wound is green, open, and has lumps. What's wrong?

Poor girl. Because this mass is open and seems to be bothering her I would highly consider having this mass removed surgically. Sometimes if the mass is small (less than 2 cm's) we can do a sedative on the pet and quickly remove these. However if it is a larger mass then general anesthesia may be required. She also needs to be placed on oral antibiotics to keep this area from getting infected and daily cleaning of the mass as well. Sterile saline flushes can help keep this area relatively clean and then an e-collar placed on her can help prevent licking. If surgery isn't an option for you, then medical management with antibiotics, e-collar and regular cleanings may allow proper healing of the area, but in most cases surgical removal is the best option. If Linda isn't pregnant or hasn't recently given birth, she shouldn't be making milk. Abnormal colors in the discharge could indicate infection or inflammation in the gland. The only way to know what a lump is caused by is to take a sample for examination under a microscope or submit a biopsy to a pathologist. I would recommend having Linda re-examined by the vet with this new information or get a second opinion.

Ouch, poor Omi! Gently wash the wound warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep her from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on her. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

Hi, I am afraid to tell you that this wound and the biting is secondary to a primary problem that is likely to be an ulcerated mammary tumour. I would really recommend to have Becky checked over as she can’t be left with an open wound that will just attract flies, parasites and must be extremely painful as well !

The best thing to do is to clean the wound well each day. You have to also make sure that the wound does not have maggots in it, because these will make the wound much worse. The fly spray is OK for outside the wound, but is not good for inside the wound and will delay healing. I recommend flushing the wound with clean water twice a day to help it heal quicker. I do not recommend applying any soaps or antiseptics like iodine to the wound, because this can also delay healing. I know this may seem contrary to what you have been told, but please trust that this is the best way to treat a wound. The black skin is dead tissue, and the hole underneath is the exposed mammary gland. Sometimes these types of mastitis can heal without surgery, but sometimes the dead tissue will need to be surgically removed to make it easier for the body to heal the wound. I would recommend that you have Daisy re-checked by a vet since this new wound appeared. I would usually start using special bandages on a wound like this to help remove remaining dead tissue and bacteria, include pain medications, and start hydrotherapy. Since these types of wounds can be very painful and irritating, Daisy should be wearing an e-collar 24-7 to avoid self-trauma.

It looks like Roxy could have a mass and/or an infection. She needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can do a needle aspirate and/or biopsy to help diagnose and then treat. It may need to be removed.
