Can I repeat dog mange dip safely? Will my dog still be contagious?

Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious to other pets and even humans. The treatment can take as long as six weeks for your puppy to respond completely and, until then, I recommend limiting your exposure to her and quarantining her away from any other pets until she is recovered.

It's difficult to say for certain, since eggs may continue to hatch and the new adult mites could be contagious. At this point it is probably unlikely that there are adults that would be contagious so if your other dog has been treated preventatively I would think it is safe for them to be together. To be safe it would probably be best for you to wear gloves until Waffles's treatment is complete.

Talk to your veterinarian about using Ivermectin or Bravecto. These are much safer than the Mitaban dip . Lyme sulfur dip is more successful for fungal infections like ringworm. I would not recommend that. Mitaban dips need to be repeated many times (usually 6 or more) every 2 weeks to be successful. The Bravecto tablet is easy and very successful.

A good bath followed by a sulfur lyme dip once a week should help speed things up. Sometimes dogs that have scabies also have a secondary bacterial and/or fungal infection. Systemic antibiotic and/or antifungal therapy is necessary to treat the skin if a secondary infection is present. Once treated appropriately, It usually takes 4-8 wks for all of the hair to grow back/mites gone. I would have a veterinarian look at his skin and prescribe you the appropriate treatment. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The Bravecto will not get rid of the demodex that quickly. I tell clients it will likely take 4-8 weeks. The lyme sulfur dip works differently than the Bravecto. I would try to wait another 2 weeks as long as Evie's skin isn't getting worse. If by 4 weeks there is no improvement I would recheck with your Vet before starting a new product. I hope this helps and I wish Evie the best!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Heisenberg. There are two common types of mites that affect dogs. One is called demodex and it naturally lives in the hair follicles of the dog. The dog can experience an overgrowth resulting in a form of mange. The second form is known as sarcoptic mange. This mite is typically spread from wild animals and is highly contagious. I'm assuming this is the type your dog has. Being outside would allow him to potentially spread it to other animals. It is not an airborne disease though. I hope this information helps you!

The absolute best way to know is if you see resolution of skin lesions and also when there are no mites detected on a skin scrape/cytology. Mites can still be present on the skin, even when the skin looks great on the outside. This will cause people to stop treating presumptively, and this results in treatment failure as the mites will come back quickly. You must have 2 negative skin scrapes done 2 weeks apart, plus resolution of skin lesions, to determine if a pet can come off medication. I hope this helps!
