What are safe alternatives for my dog's recurring demodectic mange?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The Bravecto will not get rid of the demodex that quickly. I tell clients it will likely take 4-8 weeks. The lyme sulfur dip works differently than the Bravecto. I would try to wait another 2 weeks as long as Evie's skin isn't getting worse. If by 4 weeks there is no improvement I would recheck with your Vet before starting a new product. I hope this helps and I wish Evie the best!

Very good information. Yes you are correct that topical shampoo with Benzoyl peroxide is a great addition to therapy to rid the mites. The next step would be to get her an oral treatment, which in my opinion the best and easiest way to treat Demodexx is to give her Bravecto or Nexgard. These are flea/tick preventatives, however they are also labeled for Demodexx treatment and can be given once very 1-2 months to treat Demodexx. The other way to treat Demodexx, which in my opinion is a lot more time consuming and costly, is daily Ivermectin 1%. Both these treatments will require a veterinary prescription first, so it is best to get Nu'u seen by a veterinarian if she hasn't already. It is also important to get repeat skin scrapes every 2-3 weeks during treatment to monitor her progression and also this helps you determine when she can go off her medication.

Amitraz (Mitaban) is one of 3 recommended treatments for demodecosis. It is applied every other week for 6 to 8 weeks or until there are 2 consecutive negative skin scrapes. The other two treatments are ivermectin injectable or oral given daily and Interceptor preventative administered daily. Both are administered for 6-8 weeks as well or when there are 2 consecutive negative skin scrapes. Protecting him from excess sunlight, which may cause sunburn on bare skin, is indeed recommended. Keep him in the shade, indoors or limit outside activity. An essential fatty acid supplement, such as a fish oil, may promote healthy skin and coat. Demodex infection may take months to fully resolve.

No Ivermectin is not safe, if your vet chooses to use ivermectin he must do an MDR-1 blood test prior to that, this test will reveal if your dog has the gene that causes sensitivity to ivermectin (and other drugs). if you dog is MDR-1 positive there are alternatives, personally i use Bravecto to treat Demodex in all dogs, it's very effective and works better than ivermectin in my experience, it is also safer than ivermectin.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Personally, I no longer use Ivermectin to treat Demodex. I stopped about a year ago. I started using Bravecto (flea and tick preventative) that is used to treat Demodex off label. It is not marketed for use in cases of Demodex but many vets, including myself, have been using Bravecto to treat Demodex cases with very fast responses to treatment. I would discuss this as a different treatment option with your veterinarian. Rather than using Ivermectin injections, the Bravecto is given as a treat and lasts for about 3 months for one single dose. I hope this helps! Sarcoptic mange can be treated with several medications such as ivermectin, advantage multi and bravecto. all the medications used for sarcoptic mange are prescription only, meaning you will need to get them from your vet.

After some research I have found that you can buy Ivermectin. It is very EASY to overdose so please be careful dosing your dog. It is dosed by weight. Follow the label instructions carefully and repeat every 14 days until one month after all the mange is gone. It is strongly recommended that you work with your vet on using this product.
