My dog lies on the ground, looking around, and whining. What's wrong?

Whining is an attention seeking behavior and can be a sign of anxiety, pain or potentially boredom. The shaking can also be a sign of pain or anxiety. If you think he might be in pain you should see a veterinarian to see if they can localize the pain to a specific area. If you think he may be anxious it could help to try to identify what might be triggering the anxiety - some dogs have storm or noise phobias, or he might be anxious about a change in routine or environment.

I am sorry Buddy was not feeling well/being vocal. Unfortunately based on the information you provided it is hard to give great information. Dogs can whine due to anxiety, nervous, pain, trauma, and even behavior. Caddy looks really uncomfortable in the photos. It sounds like there is a source of pain, judging from the photos, thid could be pain in the abdomen or in the back or legs. It may also be something simple like full anal glands. I would give him an hour or so to see if he settles in case its just a gassy tummy, but if he doesnt I would take him in for an examination.

If you don't have any specific symptoms that need to be addressed, your vet will likely want to perform an initial general exam, including looking in the mouth, eyes, ears, etc, and palpating the body for any signs of pain. They'll also want to take a history of information such as when the whining started, if it's in a pattern or linked to anything, what he's eating, bowel and urinary habits, etc. If anything seems out of the ordinary, your vet will then likely recommend any specific tests to rule out issues.

If only Milo could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something like anxiety or to pain/discomfort. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian who will check for evidence of pain on the physical exam. Many times this type of sudden pain is related to intervertebral disc disease, discospondylitis, upper abdominal pain or a pinched nerve. He may have a muscle sprain. If he continues to behave in this manner, its best to get him seen b your vet for a full physical exam to try and localize the painful area and get her on pet friendly pain medication to help her get more comfortable. Without knowing the underlying cause, we cannot recommend a specific treatment. The whining and inactivity are very general symptoms with multiple causes. Look her over for signs of injury or infection. This may include redness, swelling, bruising, bleeding or lameness. Make sure she is warm, fed and doesn't need to go out. If the symptoms persist or worsen, have her physically examined by your veterinarian.
